Veneers

So I'm refinishing a tele and want to try something new in the form of buying a veneer for the top, I haven't decided what wood type yet but what is your guys' experience with using veneers, and can anyone refer me to a good site to buy them from?

Re: Veneers

Have you done any guitar building???

Essentially you are remaking your tele almost from scratch. All cavities have to be re-routed, all holes redrilled. The neck will also need shimming unless you buy the very thinnest of veneers. These come with their own issues.....mainly that they are usually so thin you have to be careful with sanding etc or you go straight through.....assuming you've glued it all ok with the clamps etc.

I haven't done any actual building personally, I've always been quite interested by it though, I've refinished a strat before but that didn't require routing, I think it wouldn't be super hard though but I'll have to see.

Re: Veneers

Some of those super thin veneers you could trim out with a Stanly knife. The hard part is gluing them on, The wood is so thin it can curl like paper. I think there's special glue that would work better than say titebond.

I have seen some on ebay.

Re: Veneers

Then the other issue is dealing with the roundover on the top edge. Easy enough to continue that if the veneer is thin, but what if its a 1/4" one??
And you will be exposing the glue join on an angle, meaning an odd pinstripe effect and the veneer not covering the entire body.....hopefully sanded with an even line around the perimeter.

Re: Veneers

If you have access to a Vacuum Press, or bag set up (like you'd use to put Carbon Fiber on stuff) that will get veneers to stick down pretty well. A friend of mine made CF parts for kids "ricing out" Hondas and stuff, veneering oddly shaped wings, hoods, etc. He was gonna veneer my Tele body for me, but got Deployed before I had all my stuff, and ended up moving out of state. So yeah, look for a Vacuum setup. I've clamped stuff and gotten lucky, and clamped other stuff and had to scrape it off, so it could go either way.

The thinner it is the harder it is to clamp. I would say the vacuum would be the professional way to do it.
