I've decided to recommit to working on modifying a cheap-cheap H-S-S I picked up, and since doing my first pickup swap a little while back, I'm excited to change up any guitar I get my hands on. Please bare with me and ignore that the guitar itself is ridiculously cheap - I'm going to skip make and model.
With my first setup, I put together a JB(B) and Jazz(N) and threw in push/pulls for coil-splitting (slugs for JB and adjustables for Jazz) so I could try to get a single-coil sound. I was blown away. For this guitar, I figured throwing a single-coil in the middle and a rails/jr. humbucker in the neck position with push/pulls for splitting the bridge and neck would give me another versatile guitar.
In trying to choose pickups for myself, I first searched for "Jimi Hendrix" and came upon a thread discussing pickups that fit his sound. In reading this, I found that the SSL-1 would be a good choice, but I was hoping for that humbucker in neck.
Could I get vintage tone out of a Vintage Rails? So far, all I've come up with is a Distortion in bridge, Vintage Staggered in middle, and a Vintage Rails in neck. How's this sound? I'm open to any suggestions.
