Well this pedal is hardly new and it gets tons of praise so maybe this is sort of a "duh" moment, but I've got to say I'm really impressed with the DD-20 Giga Delay.
I certainly didn't expect it to sound bad or anything, but I did not expect it to sound as good as it does, and be as useful as it is. Its a very pleasant surprise and the more I'm using it, the more I'm finding I like and its design.
Standard delay is just that, standard, clean, steril, digital delay. Not bad and good if you need that sort of thing but not my cup of tea typically.
The analog setting while not all that authentic does give a nice high dampening effect that works well to keep the repeats from overwhelming the track, supposed to be a DM-2
The tape mod gets a decent echoplex tone and the two head option gives some awesome options, I like this one alot but for general tone and roots rock.
Twist and Warp are both pretty cliche and fun for a day and then I doubt you'd ever touch them again
Dual delay is intresting but rather limited in that one of the delays can only be up to 100ms which except for a quick slapback doesn't make it very useful, not sure what the deal with that is
Modulation is another one I really like, control over rate and depth. Its not quite a DMM, but I've been doing the a/b thing and while not the same, you can get a very similar effect
Few other settings as well but I mainly enjoy Mod, Tape and Analog myself.
Also cool is its got a tone knob, which while subtle, can help shape your sound.
What I think is really cool about this pedal though is the different time signatures options. You can have them for any mod or setting and its got everythng you can think of, triplets, dotted 8th, quarters, you name it. You can easily get a ton of tempo's with some basic tapping to quarter notes. very easy and very accurate
second thing I really love is the LCD, I didn't think it would be that big of deal either, but being able to adjust 1ms at a time is really cool for tweaking the delay time, and/or seeing what your tap tempo rates are coming up as.
Having a few presets is always nice as well mind you
I really don't find the looper section all that well laid out compared to a DL4 but I guess its useable. I'm not really a fan of it though.
I do find this to be a very functional delay pedal for day to day stuff. As the saying goes, "It just works". It sounds good, is verstaile, functional and well made.
I've got to say this does sound more transparent than the DL4 and just is more functional in daily use, save for the looper.
I still do like some of the DMM sounds I can't quite match, but overall for $100 cheaper and for all the extra things it can do, I don't know if I'll be keeping my DMM. The DD20 with its modulate mod can get you ballbark
Boss has a real winner here if you ask me and I can fully understand why people praise this pedal so.
I'm really wanting to try out the RE-20 Space Echo now as well. I know modern Boss pedals of late have been a bit disapointing overall compared to the old MIJ stuff of the 80's but I think Boss has started to make a few new modern classics again
