Very impressed with Boss DD-20

Well this pedal is hardly new and it gets tons of praise so maybe this is sort of a "duh" moment, but I've got to say I'm really impressed with the DD-20 Giga Delay.

I certainly didn't expect it to sound bad or anything, but I did not expect it to sound as good as it does, and be as useful as it is. Its a very pleasant surprise and the more I'm using it, the more I'm finding I like and its design.

Standard delay is just that, standard, clean, steril, digital delay. Not bad and good if you need that sort of thing but not my cup of tea typically.

The analog setting while not all that authentic does give a nice high dampening effect that works well to keep the repeats from overwhelming the track, supposed to be a DM-2

The tape mod gets a decent echoplex tone and the two head option gives some awesome options, I like this one alot but for general tone and roots rock.

Twist and Warp are both pretty cliche and fun for a day and then I doubt you'd ever touch them again

Dual delay is intresting but rather limited in that one of the delays can only be up to 100ms which except for a quick slapback doesn't make it very useful, not sure what the deal with that is

Modulation is another one I really like, control over rate and depth. Its not quite a DMM, but I've been doing the a/b thing and while not the same, you can get a very similar effect

Few other settings as well but I mainly enjoy Mod, Tape and Analog myself.

Also cool is its got a tone knob, which while subtle, can help shape your sound.

What I think is really cool about this pedal though is the different time signatures options. You can have them for any mod or setting and its got everythng you can think of, triplets, dotted 8th, quarters, you name it. You can easily get a ton of tempo's with some basic tapping to quarter notes. very easy and very accurate

second thing I really love is the LCD, I didn't think it would be that big of deal either, but being able to adjust 1ms at a time is really cool for tweaking the delay time, and/or seeing what your tap tempo rates are coming up as.

Having a few presets is always nice as well mind you

I really don't find the looper section all that well laid out compared to a DL4 but I guess its useable. I'm not really a fan of it though.

I do find this to be a very functional delay pedal for day to day stuff. As the saying goes, "It just works". It sounds good, is verstaile, functional and well made.

I've got to say this does sound more transparent than the DL4 and just is more functional in daily use, save for the looper.

I still do like some of the DMM sounds I can't quite match, but overall for $100 cheaper and for all the extra things it can do, I don't know if I'll be keeping my DMM. The DD20 with its modulate mod can get you ballbark

Boss has a real winner here if you ask me and I can fully understand why people praise this pedal so.

I'm really wanting to try out the RE-20 Space Echo now as well. I know modern Boss pedals of late have been a bit disapointing overall compared to the old MIJ stuff of the 80's but I think Boss has started to make a few new modern classics again

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

Anyone understand why in the dual delay mode you can only have the first delay set up to 100ms by the way ? Why for example couldn't I dial in lets say 150ms and 350ms as my delay times.

Its not a deal breaker as I never really used that setting on the DL4 but it still seems odd why they came up with the 100ms limit for the short delay time

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

I used to have one. It was nice, but for myself, I figured that, when having so many different types of delay to choose from, it would be nice to have more than 4 save slots. As soon as I can afford it, I'll find a nice rack delay to replace it.

It is indeed a cool box though.

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

I haven't looked at the manual for that thing for a long time, but I'm sure there is a way to do it. Some of the features of that pedal require some studying to learn how to access.

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

Sadly it seems to be just a limitation of the pedal as it seems to be a rather common complaint aobut the dual delay mode.

The DL4 gives you two delay lines, each with up to 2.5seconds time, I just don't get why Boss had to do the long/short and the 100ms limit.

The DL4 has its own fault though where no display and coarse adjustment knobs means you can't dial into the dual delay time you really want accurately

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

:haha:

I have a DD20 and love it... Delay is a crucial part of my sound and this pedal does it the best for me. The interface isn't as easy to use as the DL4, but I like the boss construction quality and the sound quality I prefer over the DL4. Killer pedal!

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

I agree about the dual mode.. If it wasn't that limited, I think I'd use it a lot more.. I love the smooth and the modulate modes though, and lately I have been trying out the tape mode with two heads. Very interesting..

I actually like the SOS function quite a bit, especially for practicing in a solo over a part.

Re: Very impressed with Boss DD-20

I love mine- I like that you can have a long delay set, then switch to another preset with a different type of delay and have both at the same time.
I also don't use the SOS much, but I have one delay set for about 15 seconds, with feedback at 95%, so I can do slow, evolving loops. Very fun!! Makes a pretty good chorus pedal and slow gear if you set the knobs right too.

The ability to keep the delay going when switching presets is VERY cool indeed. It takes some preplanning of course but it opens up some really fun creative options of stuff you can do on the fly. I've found I prefer setting the second footswitch to simply a/b between a preset and manual mode for doing this.

How do you set it to get the "slow gear" type sounds ?

IIRC the Slow Gear was an auto-volume swell. The DD-20 will do cool backwards guitar simulations but it's not the same as an auto volume swell.
