Very light SG with snap and no sustain needs more sustain - which pickup?

More volume usually addresses sustain problems, as would a clean boost. A compressor wouldn't hurt either.

Don't forget that a compressor set properly can squeeze a little more sustain out, too.

Compressor is an effect I struggle with... As an audiophile and RF guy, I get how they work - but how the guitar application, the knobs are labeled different and I struggle with them...

What does a "clean boost" mean in the modeling world? I know what a clean boost does to my Marshall.... But can you put a "clean boost" in the fx chain in front of a Marshall model, and have it do the same thing?

Absolutely. The big modeling companies have modeled what it does to the tone. It pretty much reacts the same way.

There are some 1 and 2 knob compressors out there, makes things simple. If yours has a Blend knob you can set the Blend at zero, max out the rest of the settings, and then barely nudge the Blend knob until you hear the effect. Without a Blend knob, just put the settings low and nudge them up until you like what you hear.
