by the by..that first part of the second clip..sounds like what McFly jammed in his father's ears in Back to the Future when he was 'darth vader from the planet vulcan' and threatened to melt his brain if he didn't ask his future wife to the dance..

lol
That's where i learned it from, i love that riff AND movie! :D I'm not even sure if i'm playing it the right way, just did it from memory LOL.

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

Man we need more of your stuff VHoholic, it is so addicting to listen to your playing, you and Kevlar3000 have those to die for sounds and style.
I could hear stuff like that everyday.

HAH! I knew it sounded familiar! lol...that scene is classic..as he whips out his walkman and places a mixed tape with 'edward van halen' written on the sticky label..lmao

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

LOL! I remember when i first saw that movie and heard that part i thought the tone was unbelievable  I always wished Ed and the boys would have written a whole song around that.

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

Definitely a '59 he's using....not brown enough to be an A2 pickup.

At one point on the 2nd clip, he's simulating the "Back To The Future" riff, albeit not accurately. Although I assume that's intentional. Damn, it sounds awesome.

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

Now that I've read the whole thread, I see that you indeed were goofing on the BTTF riff.

Yep, he goes up to 'D' before he comes back down. You were really close. Still too bright, though. Playing = superb, of course.

Clean and crisp, loved it.

Man, I'm still hoping you'd do a version of Girl Gone Bad or House of Pain :D

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

im really diggin the tone on the doodling areound with dimarzio PAF pickup. its not as close to EVH as some of the 59 clips , but i llove that tone man.

+1

Can I vote more than once? :saeek:

I actually like his playing so much, I'd like to hear him "brown-ify" or "vintage-down" one of the horrible sounding tunes like "Poundcake" or any other tune from "Unlawful Carnal knowledge" that was recorded with that awful sterile tone. Even if it was just like a 15 second clip.....

In other words, I wonder what some of those tunes would sound like had Ed used older sound, or even an OU812 sound. VHaholic is the closest thing we've got.....

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

I take back what I said. Although I don't have the BTTF clip in front of me, I just grabbed my guitar and realized that you DID hit the D chord, although I think you're missing a string. What was off was the timing/cadence/whatever.

Damn close on your part just going from memory. Damn nerdy on my part to notice the difference from memory. We should team up.

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

The begining of clip 2 sounded a little like "I Don`t Need No Doctor" by Humble Pie. Vhoholic , that 5150 combo sounds a lot better than the few I`ve ever played , is it stock? Great playing and great tone! I want to steal your riffs :D That was a 59 A5 pickup you were using?

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

I dont know if you posted this before, but what are your settings on your 5150. Its amazing how much you sound like eddie.

Re: VHoholic Sound clip *New*

Not even close to stock, as I recall.

I believe he's using the EL84s or Yellowjackets, and a cabinet full of low-wattage Celestions. That, and probably the "low sensitivity" input.

Just a guess on that last bit, though. I know when I had my 5150, I was using the low sensitivity input, using the lower-gain Rythm Channel, PLUS leaving my gain between 2-3 (out of 10), before I said, "f*ck it", and sold it.

In hindsight, the speakers and the high output pickups I was using were a HUGE part of my particular problem.

Thanks man! I have another clip i'll post soon that has a real small part of Girl Gone Bad in it. It's the run he does in the beginning with alex, right before the whole band kicks in.

My riffs are copyrighted LOL!! :D Yeah it's just a stock combo going through a Marshall 4x12 cab and the pickup is a 59.

That might have been someone else you spoke to that uses EL84s or Yellowjackets. My combo is completely stock. Only different thing i did was hook it up to a Marshall 4x12 cab with Greenbacks.
