Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

I own a Fender Bandmaster Reverb and I am considering using the amp chassis and bits to build a clone of either a Vibrolux (2X10) or a Vibroverb (1X15). I am in need of learned and knowledgeable opinions to choose which way to go. Which of these amps sound better?

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

They made Vibroverbs that were 2x10 as well.

I don't know anything about Vibroluxes but Vibroverbs are sweet amps. Essentially a Super Reverb in a smaller combo with maybe 5 or 6 changes to the circuit. Great gigging amps.

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

Thanks for the reply Andrew. So, which do you think would sound better.......the 2X10 or the 1X15? I do own a 15" JBL....not sure if is a D130 or a K130. for the 2X10, I wouldn't mind loading it with Alnicos also.....Celestion G10 Golds maybe? I also need to know what changes in the circuit. I realize I must change the output transformer.

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

Be aware that JBL D13- is different from a JPL D130F in the gap between the magnet and voice coil. Fender JBL D130F had an increased gap to handle music instruments like the guitar.

The K130 is a hi-fi speaker similar to the D130, with the same small gap.

The 1X15 sound out with a big bottom, clear mid, and sweet top end, while the 2X10 actual have more speaker area than the 1X15 and are better for a club setting.

Weber makes a really nice set of 10 inch speakers that you could mix and use to get a great tone.

10 inch Alnico Blue Pup mixed with a 10 inch Alnico Silver Ten (Has complex slightly british flavored tone, but is very sweet with a Fender Bandmaster Reverb)

Eminence also has a nice set that can mix and use to get a great tone.

10 inch Ragin Cajun mixed with Copperhead (Texas tone with Ceramic magnets)

Celestion have more of a BRITISH tone, not that common in a Fender Bandmaster Reverb amp… (Even if Fender does now use them in their Hot Rod selection)

Finally, Weber also make a great replacement for a 10 inch JBL called
NeoMag 10 speaker

Your amp is a head, right?

I'm just thinking out loud here, but I wonder if it will be possible to make a "clone" out of this amp. The power section/output transformer might not be able to be reconfigured the way you want it. Have you already looked into this?

FWIW, I used to be in a band with a guy who played through a brown tolex Vibrolux (1x12, I believe), and that amp kicked some ass tone wise.

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

Thanks guys. I know I have options and I want to make this an outstanding tone machine. Changing the iron is not out of the question as well as changing internal stuff. Making a decision whether to make the amp a combo or not.

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

That is an interesting project.
I guess it would be handy to try and keep the Mid Pot......the chassis is the same as the Verb, right.?
I do not know to be honest.
How far off is the Bandmaster circuit from either one of those.?

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

I believe there are 6 circuit changes and I would keep the mid tone control. Not too worried about aesthetics or looking like a Vibroverb. I know the iron would have to be changed. Just kicking around ideas........I have heard of somebody changing the front panel on a Bandmaster Reverb and replacing it with a baffle and loading 2X8 speakers.........any ideas about how that would sound in conjunction with external cab speakers? I am thinking that might be interesting with a cab with 2X10s or 2X12s. Opinions are most welcome and has anyone ever done this or know of someone who has?

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

I would say your first thoughts were on the right track.
Keep all the original Iron.
Make no changes on the outside, adjust the stock circuit as much as you can without making it a "big deal".....10 vs. 12 is a classic battle.:)
No right or wrong there.
Go Slow....good luck

Re: Vibrolux or Vibroverb For A Clone..............

Personally, I'd leave it stock. It seems that even the less desirable "vintage" Fender amps are becoming more and more valuable these days. Add to that the fact that there are so many amp kits available as well just parts and schematics these day, you're probably better off building from scratch to get what you want.

I know that doesn't answer your question at all...

I used a Bandmaster Reverb to make a Virboverb clone back around 2001, which I ended up giving away to another SDForum member down in Houston (e.g., Jake)

It will work just fine.
