Vibrolux update

Got the Vibrolux back from a tune up/recap. MUCH better, but playing it kinda confirmed what i already knew. With the CTS alnico speakers, it has a bit of trouble handling buckers. The amp is rather finicky, but a comment made by someone a while back is true. This amp REALLY likes Teles, especially the Nocaster. But you ain't gonna get a hard rock sound with that combo. Classic clean Tele twang out the wazzoo. Similar experience with the '62 Strat.......quackiness in every position. Very clean sounding amp. Doesn't break much until around 7-8 and the speakers don't handle it well. May be time for some Webers:chairfall I was expecting it to be louder, but i must admit, my only experience with mid-sized Fenders has been with the tweed Twin and Super, so that is not a fair comparison. The Twin is actually a fair bit louder than I was expecting and gets REAL bottomy and crunchy and moves a ton of air at high volumes. And, of course, a good Super can render you sterile in a small room:laugh2: Twin and 18w are still the most versatile amps i have as far as what kinds of guitars they like.

That amp done up, is a country players dream. I prefer something thicker for R&B, but for that old cutting, crystaline sound - Vibrolux = NIIIIIIIIICE

Re: Vibrolux update

yeah.....when i plug that Nocaster in, it wants to sound like a classic Tele and there ain't nuttin you can do to convince it otherwise:laugh2: Fortunately, i happen to like that and i have the nasty blues/rock Fenders with the Twin and Deluxe, so i have all of the bases covered now. It's hard to get a lot of real clean volume out of the Twin with buckers. It wants to get up and boogie right away.:fingersx:

No kidding...my uncle has been playing country for years- Tele through a Vibrolux. Whenever I'm playing some country stuff for fun, that's the tone I'm going for. Just a classic combo.

My 66 Vibrolux starts breaking up at around 4,5...it has original gold/red label Jensens and GEC KT66 power tubes....you say youre's breaks up at 7 or 8.

Depends on the guitar. I have been playing my '54 RI Strat a lot through it the last few days and it breaks up a little earlier, but nothing likethe twin or 18w. Mr.Vibrolux LOVES his fellow Fenders and don't care much for the Gibbies. He even likes the rather bright Antiquities in the '54. It actually may sound better through the Vibrolux than the '62 RI, which seems to really like the Twin and 18w. I have RCA black plate 6L6's in it.

Re: Vibrolux update

I used a BF Vibrolux with ceramic Jensens for quite a while gigging and it sounded best with my early 60's 335. I had about 3 or 4 of them for a few years there in the early 90's (they used to go for 100-200 dollars here) and they all sounded different...with some C10Q's, it should be a little more friendly with HBs.

I have a nice set of ceramic Webers, but they are 16 ohms wired up to run an 8 ohm load. If i wanted to use them, I would need to replace the OT with on of the Mercury multi-tap units. Ironic part is that it would be cheaper to do that than to buy new Webers..:laugh2: I wonder if that would make the amp a bit louder.
