Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

Re: Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

That's a great clip. At the first few bars, I'll admit that I thought "No, I'm not really into this smooth jazz stuff. I don't want to waste 14 minute listening to this." But, I decided to stick with it. I actually liked it. I could aquire a taste for this. Nice playing, easy pleasant tone. I love the organ. Is that the Hammond B3? I'd love to play like those guys. The demonstrated at least a couple different ways to set-up contrasts and restful sections.

Thanks for the clip.

Why is it that the majority of the jazz players use semi-hollow humbucker equipped guitars? Why not more stratocasters and teles in the hands of jazz players?

Yeah, It does look like a B3 but it's been decades since I last saw one!

Pat Martino = Smooth Jazz! Blasphemy! I rent my garment! :laugh2:

Once again Pat is from the Wes Mongomery, Jimi Smith Organ Trio school! There is a reason why people call Jimi Smith the world greatest guitar teacher! :chairfall

As for hollow body / semi's, It's just one of those things that you have to experience. Once you start exploring jazz styles like bebop and hard bop on whatever axe you're playing on then you are bound to try a hollow or simi-hollow sooner or later. Then maybe if you're lucky you'll go to a shop and just by chance pick up a Gibson ES 137. Afterwhich you will proceed to forget any other guitar that you have previously owned! :chairfall

No seriously, it's just because they make such phenominal jazz guitars! Why else would anyone put something the size of a truck on their chest! If you get into jazz and you start to understand the subtlies of the phrasing and the variety of clean tones, articulation then the sounds that these guitars produce are just orgasmic! You get the rich, glass-like electric sound from the humbuckers + you can hear the hollow resonance coming thru.

But it just has to be your style or you just won't get it!

My apology. :) I should resist attempts to categorize.

He sounds great. I could see myself getting a bit more into jazz. I've trying to figure out how to define jazz. The best I can do is the say that jazz is an on-going experiment in music. It may borrow from the past and make it new.

BTW, I almost bought a Jimmy Smith CD last week, but I ended up getting Charlie Parker, Ray Charles, and Muddy Waters instead. Maybe next week I'll begin taking lessons from Jimmy Smith.

sweet clip - pat's playing spoke to me more - especially his tone ... gotta love Joey D on b3 ... nice work from a pair of philly boys :D ... the rhythm section was smokin the pocket too ... so tight and loose all at the same time

i still question pat's taking two heads with the same lick at the end of his first solo .... but when i can play like that, then i'll know why it was happenin :D ... i did chuckle when joey parroted it back to him for half a head in his solo

the 2 minute outtro was very hip ...

thanks for sharing it
t4d

ps - and is it just me, or is sco looking more and more like jim hall as he ages? :D

The Benson clip was cool too! I see he had the "Dookie Stick" (George Duke) on the keys! That had to be a slammin set!

Most people don't realize how close the cats are! I recently saw Martino live. He told stories how all the major guitar players in the Wes Montgomery era used to go to each others gigs! Then they would all just hang out and BS together! They would always hangout with Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Pat Martino, Grant Green and Les Paul.

Just BSin together after a night of giggin! That must be what heaven is like!

Re: Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

That was great! It was like they both wanted to get the last lick in. :D

I need to expand my horizons. I honestly don't know which was Pat and which was John. :blackeye:

(But I'll know before the nights over.)

Re: Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

pat played the head with the red burst single cut gibson at center stage... sco came in later with the tobacco sunburst double cut ibanez standing by the B3

Re: Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

Great playing and beautiful tone. I wish I had a hollowbody but I don't have the cash. I went through a year of jazz band playing an Evo.

Re: Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

I don't know if many are aware of the fact that, after brain surgery, Martino suffered a severe case of amnesia and has had to relearn not only to play the guitar, but also how to play like himself.

Incredible.

If you pickup any Jimmy Smith there are a few I would recommend. He did 2 records with Wes........ both are exceptional. He also did one with Kenny Burrell. I really love Kenny Burells playing. He is a real Blues player playing in a Jazz Enviornment. Its wonderful to listen to. When it comes to tradional Jazz guitar playing Wes is one of my favorite, but what I really like about Kenny Burrell is all of his lines make sense to me. As beautiful as some other guys can play I have a hard time following what they are trying to say. Kenny and Wes always made what they were playing easy to understand!

Re: Video: Scofy sits in w/ Pat

Yeah, Jimmy is definately a mixed bag! You could end up with anything ranging from him playing "Back at the Chicken Shack!" to playing with an orchestra! ROFL!

Pat just has a young spirit man! He has to be the youngest old guy I've ever seen!
