"Vintage" Fender Amp Gas

I love Fender amps. All my friends have Fender Blues Juniors or Hot Rod Deluxes or Champ 600s. My music school has a 72 Silverface Twin Reverb with master volume that when I plug in my AC Booster I get this fantastic freddie king tone. One of the teachers there who I used to play with a lot has a '64 Blackface Concert and an original TS9 which sounded godly. Another teahcer had a brownface Deluxe which sounded unreal with a bunch of pedals and a strat. Then there is also a '65 Super Reverb floating around there that is dead mint and all original that sounds absolutely ridiculous. Then I have my Tweed Twin and my Princeton Reverb clone... Fender amps are all around me and are the sounds I've always fell in love with.

Now another teacher at my music school just got a '64 Vibroverb Custom becuase he was sick of fixing his beat up his old Fender (I think he has a vintage Super Reverb also, maybe a '66). He kept telling me how amazing the Vibroverb was and I had my doubts after being obsessed with the vintage blackface/silverface stuff I was used to hearing. Then I played through it when I subbed for this band. It was a 3 hour rehearsal so I had plenty of time to dial in stuff with my 335 and AC Booster.

Long story short, dead stock and only a few weeks old (speaker and tubes still not broken in yet and such), this thing sounded fantastic! I didn't mess with the back switches too much (preamp gain thing and tube vs ss rectifier), but the SS rectifier seemed to "modernize" the amp a little bit if you will. Slightly cleaner, slightly brighter. The overdrive tones were super smooth and the clean was unbeatable. The 15" Emi really dishes out the goods, nice strong lows in there. Perhaps if I get a scholarship, I'll be able to get this thing for shiz and giggles :cool2:

Definitely an amp to check out guys, I really dug it.

Man...you are one of my favorite forum members! We're so much alike, it's just funny to me.

And I really wish I could get one of those too. Maybe one of the coolest Fenders to be released in decades. Some people may knock it, but it really is a cool new blackface amp.

I spent the 90's really loving good Fenders and boutique Fender clones, then somehow did a 180 toward British amps, just for a whole new flavor. And now, I find myself wanting to dip back into Blackfaces. It's like a full circle sorta thing....which I've already gone through twice. I think in the end, you just need one of everything, as a lover of great tone.

Ya know, my first good amp ws my 69 Twin Reverb...since then I've owned lots and lots of amps by different makers and for some reason I always seem to come back to Fender amps! There is just something magical about a good Fender amp and in truth if I had to only have one brand of amps from here on out I'd go Fender w/o a second thought!

Yeah, the SS rectifier mod is a good one IMO that I play in a jazz/fusion band as my main thing, that little bit of extra headroom is good for that clean wes or grant green tones that I need. I gotta see if I sub for a band again and the guy with the vibroverb brings it, I gotta check out the Texas gain mod thing.

Hehe thanks, I'm honored. I remember reading something bad about the '64 Vibroverb Custom on this forum but I forget what. It was a sick amp, I was wondering what most of you guys thought about it (good or bad). I left my Tweed Twin (same line as the Vibroverb RI) pretty much stock with the exception of some JJ Preamp tubes and I love it. I'm wondering what criticisms people have on the amp...

I do not really like EL84 type amps at all. I like big fat clean tones so I need either 6V6s or 6L6s really. I just prefer that stuff. I played a lot of boutique amps too (Bad Cat, 65 amps, Fuchs, Suhr, Orange) and theyre all cool, but I just like the Fenders the best. Marshalls are a no-no for me. My Tweed Twin can get into that Marshall territory when I set it up right, but still has a fatness that most Marshalls do not have IMO. Perhaps I can see myself going through a dumble clone one day (like the Fuchs Tripledrive), but that's after I hit the lottery!

I feel the same. I love pedals and that's probably why, but even so, with my 335 or Lester, I can go straight into the Tweed Twin and get amazing tone too. Good stuff

Played through a 68' Blackface with an original TS9. Unbelievable!
