Vintage Hot Stack Plus + Blackout Preamp

Greetings,

I've recently acquired the parts to build up a Charvel Model 4M. As the guitar was originally active, I'd like to keep it that way. Instead of the Jackson single coils (think these were stacked humbuckers), I was thinking of setting it up with Vintage Hot Stack Plus models in the neck and middle (humbucker TBD) along with a Blackout preamp. Wondering if it's been tried and if so, would it be suitable?

I'm thinking the body is made of basswood set up for a Floyd. I currently have the neck on a model 2 body with a Hot Rail and Floyd (bigger brass block installed), and strung with 10's. If I had to guess, the pot is a 500K. Unamplified, it's loud and it rings out like mad. The Hot Rail has a lot of oomph to it.

If the Blackout preamp isn't recommended, what pot value is recommended for the Vintage Hot Stack Plus.

Thanks and best regards!

Re: Vintage Hot Stack Plus + Blackout Preamp

You can certainly use the Blackout preamp with any passive pickup. I think the Vintage Hot Stack Plus is pretty hot as it is, with a little bit more bass than a regular single coil. Boosting this further (along with the humbucker) will make a seriously hot guitar- so be careful about excessive compression, and overdriving the input of any amp you plug it into. As long as you are cool with that, then go for it.
If you don't use the Blackout, use a 500k pot to get a little more high end out of those pickups.
