Vintage Speaker + Modern Head ?

I'm going to change my cab speakers into something more vintage because i find the sound too trebley. I'm using a laney Ironheart Head and is interested with the celestion G12 greenback speaker. The question is whether this combination will work or sound crap?

Of course it'll work. Whether you like it or not is a question only you can answer though.

What speaker are you using now? What do you like and dislike about your current setup? What are you looking for in your sound?

Re: Vintage Speaker + Modern Head ?

Will a vintage speaker make a modern amp less modern in gain ? What is the difference between greenback and the upgraded more 'power' version in tone?

Re: Vintage Speaker + Modern Head ?

@eric I'm using the matching 412 cab and it sounds a little trebly and thin i want a more open sound

Re: Vintage Speaker + Modern Head ?

The risk you run is more a problem of the speaker having not a frequency response and clarity to handle modern high gain amps. If you're tuning to A and playing through a triple rectum fryer something like a greenback might turn to mush.

Very good point but don't blame it on the speakers completely ;) It also depends on the amount of gain used and also heavily on presence and mid settings. A contemporary very high gain sound with somewhat tamed mid that sounds alright through V30 or T75 may indeed sound mushy through Greens down there.

Anyway, your amp if you don't use your amp dimed or don't tune much below C, Greens are supposed to sweeten up the Ironheart nicely.
