Volume and tone in one

Hello everybody!

I'm searching a solution for a tone and volume problem. My strat has 2 rotary switches (please don't ask why). They are for mods and special switching. So i have only 1 hole empty in my strat. How can i put a master volume and master tone in there ? I thought to let make a pot when it's up you have a normal pot (volume) and when you push it down you have a rotary switch (tone with different caps). Is there another solution ?

Re: Volume and tone in one

i would get the concentric pots ray is talking about.

a push/pull pot cannot be used as a rotary switch or at least ive never seen any push/pull pot with anything other than a dpdt switch on a normal pot

Re: Volume and tone in one

I am not aware of any product that would be a rotary switch and a pot with pulling and/or pushing between the two.

In my humble opinion, the time may have come to quit trying to extract every possible tone known to humankind out of one electric guitar. Buy a second Stratocaster.

I've found a very easy wiring (for me) and i want just a solution for this. This topic isn't about wiring of the pickups. I think i'm not the only one who wants this.

Yes i know but the problem with double pots is that you can't use a strat knob!

You didn't say you wanted to keep it close to a stock appearance, so I don't think anyone assumed that was the case.

The first thing I'd do would be to try an electronics distributor that is not specifically guitar related. They may have, or be able to order, a dual concentric pot with a spit shaft on top, so you can use a Strat knob on top of the stacked pots. Pots come in just about every orientation under the sun, so something like that probably exists somewhere. You just have to track it down.

If that doesn't work out, I would consider a solid shaft stacked pot with a ring knob on the bottom shaft and a Strat knob on the top shaft. (Fender actually put plastic knobs on solid shafts on the very first Strats, so it has been done.) You can drill out the Strat knob to fit the solid shaft tightly, and maybe rough up the solid shaft and use some glue as well. Or, probably the best option, you could take a solid shaft pot to a machine shop and have them knurl the shaft so it will grip a Strat knob.

Even if you wire a push/pull to switch between volume and tone functions using the same pot, I doubt you'd like the reality of using it. Say you have it pulled up to use it as a tone control. It wouldn't leave the volume where you had set it; you'd automatically get no load. Also, say you have it at 5 or 6 while using it as a tone control. You decide you want to do some volume swells, so you push the knob down to make it a volume knob. Your tone doesn't stay at 5 or 6; it becomes the same as a no load tone pot. So even if you could wire it up so that the push/pull switched the pot between volume and tone, it would be pretty useless IMO.

Re: Volume and tone in one

Hey thanks for that information! I'm going to just put a master volume in there and no tone control. (i leave my tone almost always on 10). And later i will contact the people from the custom shop from www.singlecoil.com to make maybe a special pot. Thanks for the informaiton !
