What is the purpose of having your volume pedal after the ODs or distortions and before the modulation effects other than being able to kill the audible buzz/hiss that comes from the OD/Distortion pedals?
I use mine after the overdrives and wah but before the reverb. I like the attack and punch from the drives and the ability to drop it down as needed.
So does it affect overall tonal color of the ODs/Distortions if its after them? Mine is set before them right now and I can tell when swelling in or building on a part that it starts off clean sounding and then gets dirty toward the end of the sweep. If I put the volume pedal after the ODs/ distortion, it will prevent this?
Different effects, volume before OD/Dist also controls the amount of distortion in addition to volume, like using the guitar's volume knob. After OD/Dist, it doesn't affect the amount of distortion, just the volume going to the amp. Also, you probably want a high impedance vol pedal if you are running it first, a low impedance after buffered pedals. If you are using a all true bypass pedals up to the volume pedal, you can probably get by with a high impedance volume pedal.
If volume pedal is first, you can use it like a volume control on your guitar to reduce gain. If you use it after OD but before delay, you can pull back your volume but the delay and reverb trails remain. (Your guitar volume affects the gain level, the pedal simply adjust the volume of the distortion. If you put it last, it controls the overall volume of your rig (keeping the same level of distortion, modulation and trails, but matching to the volume of the band)
Of course, the best guitar related show on the internet covered it:
That is exactly why I bought one. I am going to incorporate it into other peojects as well, but I needed something to helps swells when playing in church.
