Volume pot wiring - output or pickup on the wiper?

Help me out here, fellas! Generally, I'm still trying to understand why there's a difference in connecting a pickup's hot lead to the wiper of a pot, as opposed to the output. I know that end result allows you to independently control the volume of two pickups in parallel, but I admittedly don't understand why.

More specifically, I'm looking at the following wiring diagram: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=jass_bass_sp. I know the parallel position is standard jazz bass, but my question is regarding the bridge volume pot when the switch is thrown to the series position. I know the bridge volume pot would no longer independently control the bridge pickup, but surely that volume pot hanging out on the hot side of the signal would have an effect on the series operation.

Any insight you guys can provide would be much appreciated. If you're interested, I'm looking to wire a music man bass pickup in this manner.
