on my rg i am in the middle of changing out the 500k volume for a 250k to bring the brightness down of my jb... there is a cap across the center terminal and the outer (not the one that is grounded) anyways i was wondering if i should leave it in or remove it since it isn't on the wiring diagram i have

diagram http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/support/schematics/hum_sing_hum_vol_tone_spl.html

mine has a 500k for the tone still and doesn't say the cap value on the one i have i imagine it is different though

i left it out for now and it seems to sound alot better but if i should put it back for some unknown reason to me please say something

Hi Chi3f; That cap is called a "treble-bleed" cap. Its similiar in function to what is known as the "50's mod". Its purpose is to allow some of the treble to bypass the volume control, (as you turn it down), thus, brightening the sound.

Since you are replacing a 500k pot with a 250k, to bring down the brightness, its probably a good idea to leave it out.

The bottom line is: anytime you make a change to your guitar, and you think it sounds better - you did the right thing. ;)

BTW - Do a forum search for "50's mod" to find out more about this. (Or, a Google search, for that matter.)

I would have removed the treble bleed cap (actually I did on my RG) and leave the 500k pot in there. That way you can roll the volume pot back a little to darken up the guitar and then the volume pot can be used as a volume/treble boost for lead work.

Exactly what I was thinking. :D Instead of changing the pot just remove the bleed cap and see if that does the trick. Lew

thanks alot it sounds really nice now and still has a bright sound just not the extreme bright i had when i first did it. for me it's about perfect

this is the sound i was hoping for from the pickup swap, i was sorta worried a couple days ago when i swapped them cuz that jb had such an extreme high to it sounded like it was missing half it's tone, but i dind't want to mess up the sound i was getting from that jazz because that one sounded great with the 500k already

maybe i will put the 500k back in at some point to check it out but it sounds soo good and it made the jazz a lil warmer too so it has more blues type sound but with the great clarity that the pickup has

i wish i swapped the pups out a couple years ago now on to swapping the pups on my other guitars :)
