VolumeDrops/old tubes???

So, I am landing my AOR to my friend for a gig, he told me that while he was figuring out the settings and playing it, he said that a he had a few two second "volume drops" where it didn't go dead but went a lot quiter. Now he thinks its old tubes, they are very old, however I think its the fact that he plugged in right in to the wall not even a surgeportector. What do you think ???

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

crappy poiwer could do it, but power tubes too, if there was a surge then the fuse in your amp should have blown.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

I would clean the tube sockets and all the jacks including FX loop. Definately could be tubes, but most of mine are 35 to 40 yrs old. Might just not be making good connections. Filter caps may also be an issue.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

I am about to start using Mass Lite to tame the beast for bedroom level, that little accident I described above, would trasnlate to a disaster with MassLite on, would it? Thanks Dudes.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

Have you had the filter caps addressed? If they are original, they can certainly effect your output. Have you experienced it yourself? Many times, I have simply had dirty jacks, both input and speaker, cause output problems. I clean them every few months, a couple amps I thought had some issues, now have zero problems.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

I think my AOR is telling me he would like some new filter caps please. What would people recomend, I dont know if it matters with caps, but you know I play high gain most of the time at this point I ran it through my mass with MV never goint past two actually, but one drummer comes on board I would be taking it up quite a bit at rehearsals, preservation of a AOR Laney british tone is a must of course. Kev, calling Dr.Kevlar.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

I woud replace the tubes first- it is the cheapest thing to try-and if your tubes are very old as you say, it's most likely the culprit, IMO
plugging into a surge protecter- I really don't think that will make that much difference,
I don't know that many people that use them anyway, and we/they don't have any problems wil volume drops.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

Nah, it has new tubes in both section, just got Pot and Jacks done, every now then there fluctuations in saturation, its rare and usually when I dont let warm up on a stand by for a few munites. I think it has OG caps, which means theya are about 22 years old.

Re: VolumeDrops/old tubes???

Yeah Kev, I got that, but I am asking what brand has the best AOR tone preservation quality when pre-amp is minimum at 3 o'clock and pushed with OD 95% of the time.
