Voodoo Mods

Have any of you dealt with Voodoo mods? I'm considering getting my amp modded by them. Its a Marshall TSL122 and it works for me well but the mods on their site seem to describe what I'd like. ALso I found out they are located only 3 hours away from me. So I would avoid shipping on an 80 pound amp. I was thinking about getting rid of this amp, but it would cost me more money then the mod. Any thoughts?

Re: Voodoo Mods

Trace Allen is a personal friend of mine...In fact I Own what used to be one of his 50 watt metal faced Marshalls...Heckuva nice guy, very knowledgable, his mods really work and they work well...Trace is absolutely one of the nicest guys you'll get to deal with and he's only happy when you're 100% happy...Honestly...If you ever need any future info on mods or just info in general,Trace will always take time out of his busy day and help you...That says alot in my mind..

Re: Voodoo Mods

When I was looking to have my JCM 800 modded, it came down to Trace or Jeff Seal. What ultimately made up my mind for me was what could be done with my clean channel. Trace indicated he would have to get the amp and see how much improvement he could make. Jeff said he could convert it to Fender Blackface specs, and not be able to tell the difference from a real Fender BF with my eyes closed.....and he wasn't lying.

Jeff did a fantastic job on my amp, and I couldn't be happier. I'm not sure what the actual differences in the respective mods are, but Jeff converted my JCM to a true PTP wiring scheme. Incredible Fender cleans and the best OD from any amp I have been able to really play. I suspect that Trace simply upgrades and replaces existing components within the PCB board already in the amp. Nothing wrong with that. Jeff completely removed my PCB board and put in a hand wired PTP board. It is a sight to behold.

Either Trace or Jeff will go out of their way to make sure you are happy, and Jeff is too modest to toot his own horn in a thread.....but I'm not. My JCM was a 4212 combo, so I took the chassis out and just shipped that. Approx 25 lbs...which should be close to what a head weighs. From Denver to Houston via Fed Ex Ground (which is the cheapest I've found in the states) was $17.....so don't let the cost of shipping stop you from getting what you want.

Like I said....Trace and annother gentlemen who's name escapes me right now on the east cost were the only amp modders that responded to my inquires about sending them work (besides Jeff Seal of course)....that says a ton in my book. Trace has a great reputation for a reason....he does great work.

Either way you can't go wrong....but my nod goes to Jeff Seal based on personal experience.

Re: Voodoo Mods

My only experience with Voodoo so far is in communication. Trace has taken the time to respond to the numorous emails I've sent back and forth regarding having mods done to my amp (having a variac added to the rectifier). Now I just need to save up the money....

Re: Voodoo Mods

I've had to fix a few solder joints in my TSL and there are like 3-4 circuit boards all crammed with stuff, it would probably be physically impossible to bring this beast to p2p.

I know he is gonna put a plexi transformer on it. Some of the harmony central views said the clean was fendery, the crunch was much like a plexi, and the lead was very high gain. I do agree the amp sounds behind a wall and they all said they bring it back out front. The reviews seemed fairly consistant and before opinions seemed in line.

One of the main reasons I'm prolly gonna go with Trace is that I can be there in person to see this thing.

Do you think also that'd he'd have his mods on display? I sort of want to see what I'm paying for before it goes under the knife. I'm 16 and 400 bucks is a bundle. I know what he'll do will make it much better, I'm just wondering how much.

Re: Voodoo Mods

He doesn't like to say to much about his mods for fear of people ripping him off. As good as his communications were, it made it a pain in the ass when he won't tell you exactly what he's going to do so you can make an informed decision about what you're spending your money on. It almost caused me to walk away from the project, but he has a good reputation, so.....
