VOX ac4TV finding of the day

I had this combo about 2 years ago and liked it but it naturally sounded boxy and didn't do cleans really at all. That's ok, that's what it was meant for and what it did, it did well.

I got another one recently and it still sounds great at what it does. I plugged it into my pine 1x12 cab with a Texas heat.....holy crap. Totally different amp. Loud as can be, some decent cleans in there (although still very VOX-y) and just a way different feel. I know the Texas heat is a pretty killer speaker but man, what a difference. Anyone else had a similar experience or am I just hearing things?

It's not just the amp, it's what you run it through. I have a Picovalve that I run through a 12" C-Rex, doesn't sound anything like the clips I've seen on YouTube.

Loudspeaker choice can really make or break a small wattage amplifier. I typically (90% of the time) run my amps into an iso cab for recording, and matching the correct speaker depending on the sound I am after is crticial.

Gonna agree with everyone else. Tiny and/or cheap speakers are the weakest link all the time in budget amps, IMO, especially those low-wattage tube amps. Many of them are really good designs, but good speakers are never cheap (and are rarely bedroom-friendly).

Roland Cube 60. Ordinary on it's own. Way better than it's supposed to be through a quality cab.

I wonder if the Line 6 "Spider" stuff is any good through proper guitar speakers and not the hopeless crap they load on their cabs.
