which clean setting (model-drive/volume) is the best for adding a pedal (Overdrive or Distortion)?

I like the black 2x12 at 4 or 5/10 preamp volume and the Tweed 4x10 set at 3 or 4/10...maybe even the AC30 set a little lower in the preamp
and if you wanna over drive one of the gainy amp models try tje UK 80s at 4 or 5/10 and push it with a overdrive...The Soldano US Modern too
lots of fun to be had although the models dont sound as real with pedals IMO

Each amp in the Vox has it's own unique sound. Try this trick.....turn the master volume up to 10, then use the gain knob as the amp's volume. It cleans up the overall sound, so you can really hear what it'd sound like, and acts more like a tube amp with the gain as your primary volume knob. That's a good way to use modelers, when you want it to be a loud gig-worthy tone.
Also, if it has OD models, use those in conjunction with the gain knob, to dial in the right flavor of gain.

Sounds like the new Valvetronix XL line is going to solve the problem of not having enough gain on tap in the current models. I haven't found external distortion pedals that really mix well with the lower gain models. I bought an original Valvetronix Tonelab (they were going for 200$ lately) And run it through a cheap 50 watt Peavey valveking combo. The Tonelab also has a virtual gain knob and 2 stomp boxes built in to add to the regular gain control. I also get not only the tube character from the Tonelab, but also get the real tube warmth of running it through a real tube amp. You do need to run it through an amp that has a bright switch. The one on the valveking has to be on or the models sound a bit muddy. The Blueface AD60VTX models are going for as little as 499$ lately. They have almost all the features the Tonelab has, and are much better amps than the silverface models. I am sill hoping Vox updates the blueface models as well, for now they are discontinued.

I've yet to find a pedal that my AD50 doesn't take well. My modded DS-1 sounds like an absolute monster through the Blackface 2x12 model.
With my band, I don't use any OD pedals at all, just what the models offer. The US High Gain model has more than enough gain for me, and I don't even have the gain up high at all, barely past noon on the dial. The volume is up around 3 o'clock, master around noon-1 o'clock and then I adjust the wattage selector on the back for the overall volume.
Joe, the AD15/30/50/100 have the Gain, Volume and Master Volume so that trick will work to a point as long as the Volume is up all the way too. There's also no OD pedal models in it, just the 11 amp models and some effects.

Boutique Clean channel with a Duncan SFX-03 in front of it, turns that channel into whatever you want, at least at bedroom levels. Otherwise, I just use the other channels of the amp for a distorted tone (uk modern), and clean channel one. This is all with the ad50 anda strat so actual results may vary.
