I have the AC30 model on the way-should be here Mon. Hope I didn't just waste 99 bux on a POS, but wtf, I got it for testing things in the shop. I'll get back on this next week.

The line 6 pocket pod and pocket pod express come to mind. I assume since you are considering the lead and metal versions that you are looking for high gain. Imo, the amplugs dont do high gain very well.

I have the "Classic" (Marshall) version and love it for hotel room practice in business trips. It sounds like the first Aerosmith album. It's also good with an SD-1 or BB Preamp in front.

These came early on Fri. A beetch to dial in. You have to take them off to adjust.. the effect sh1tz seems useless. The jury's out....
My Lil NT w/ pro Sony H phs blows this into the garbage pile.

I have the classic rock one. I like it. The problem with these things is that people lose sight of what they are : a gadget designed to jam with amplified sound to your ears on the fly. It does that very well.

Re: vox amplug headphone amps

With a little work, meh, dont expect a lot. As Phil_104 said don't lose sight of what they are.

Re: vox amplug headphone amps

I'm not sure what anyone could possibly expect from these other than a convenient practice tool that sounds decent for the limited function they serve. If they were overly versatile, they wouldn't need a gazillion different versions. The problem that is in my experience, they are convenient, that's about it. They cant do the one tone they are meant for even remotely competently and at 40-50 bucks aren't exactly cheap for what they are.

Re: vox amplug headphone amps

I own two Vox amplug: Metal and Lead models. They're not the new version into a headphone, but the "tiny box" with external earbuds/speakers.

I play hard rock and heavy metal. The lead model takes it from acdc to guns n roses, but the metal model isnt so versatile. It delivers thick distorted sounds, think of metallica to slipknot.

Never forget it is a practice tool... But IMO the lead model is amazing. It delivers great sound and sustain. I can get close to a Slash's sound with my les Paul... for 35€!

The metal model isnt so good, but I like it too. It has a really full sound, at least with SG/Les Paul. Try to set all controls at 6-6-6. Its not a joke, its the sweet spot!

This said, I must say they sound WAY BETTER when plugged to an external speaker, even if its small & cheap. I only use headphones at night.

Re: vox amplug headphone amps

I have the metal with good headphones it sounds like I am playing through a stack. Problem is you can't clean it up. I am thinking about picking up the AC30 or amPlug Twin, I typically practice clean.
