Vox....fill me in

I am starting to find myself being very drawn to the VOX sound. Lately I have been really getting into Kathleen Edwards. Her lead guitarist has this creamiest, almoust mournful tone. He plays a SG into what appears to be a Vox, and a 50's fender. I can not tell how he is splitting his signal. The tone is awesome, especially when playing slide. Actually i think it is one of the best slightly driven tones I have heard in a long time. Here are a few vids with more of his country tone. the songs on you tube were he plays slide more, have crappy sound. the second has the slide work after 40 sec.

Any way I have been hearing the Vox sound more and liking it, but I have never played vox, and know nothing about the amps. what are their good amps, who makes the good clones, what are the layout of the amps like what tubes do there amps use, or any other pertinent info would be appreciated.

Re: Vox....fill me in

Hello, as an owner of an AC15cc, i too love the ol vox throaty tone.
The CC stands for custom classic, which is the current production stuff from the China factory. There's an era known as the Korg years, which are UK made from a few years back, then the real deal vintage era, also with various company ownerships and their issues...

Goodies are the AC30. But the best place to sniff about for good info and good people is at this very good forum : http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/viewforum.php?f=2

An hour here will get you well up to speed. Have a look at Northcoast musics site for extra yummy new vox amps. . . ohhhh http://www.voxshowroom.com/northcoast/

I've played the Vox AC30CC 2x12 combo with Vox speakers a few times. I really love the sound of that thing. I haven't had to opportunity to compare with a vintage AC30, but this thing sounds great.

Re: Vox....fill me in

I've got a Vox AC30TBX, which is the AC30 with top boost and blue alnico speakers. It's the cat's pajamas. I love the sound of my guitar split between the AC30 and my Super Reverb.

The best tones I get out of the AC30 are single coil > compressor > AC30 (for clean) and humbucker > Rangermaster treble boost > AC30 (for rich overdrive).

I'm having a newfound love for EL-84 amps too. I think the appeal is that they give up the goods sooner than bigger power tubes. They're really moldable as far as tubes and speaker choice too. I love the way they take clean boost OD pedals. Instead of getting preamp gain, you're getting thick power tube tone. If you just turn up an AC-30 amp, they can sound too bitey in the highs, but with an OD at lower levels, they sound as fat as EL-34's, and have better chime and transparency.

Re: Vox....fill me in

I recently "found" Kathleen Edwards & yeah, GREAT tones. I've been really getting into Alt Country/Americana stuff lately & basically, my set-up kicks for that/those tones:

Tophat King Royale(EL84) w/Tophat 2x12 (Weber Anico Blue Dogs)
Celtic Edana(KT66) w/Marshall 2x12 (H30/V30)

Thinline Tele or Firebird w/Lawrence minihums

Blackstone S2v3 OD
Diamond Compressor
Tonefactor Huckleberry (AM Sunlion coming soon :D )
RGW Bad Bob Boost
RGW Dirty Dan OD
Donnerbox Spatial Delay
Startouch ABY

Covers a LOT of bases....
