For the record I don't think the tone on that song was supposed to be "good". I think it was supposed to sound weird in it's own way.

Exactly. It might seem ironic, but Satch probably wasn't trying to record a pedal demo when he tracked that album. I think he was trying to create textures that would give the notes a bit of focus so you could really hear what was going on inside those runs. The album is rich with textures -- from the riffs to the solos, from the bass guitar to those atmospheric clean parts. It's just such a great record, and for me that's partly because of all those unconventional tones.

There's a LOT of Duncan pickup content on the album. Satch himself said in GP magazine a few years ago that his main guitar for the record was a Kramer with a '59 neck and a JB in it. He also had a parts Strat that he had a Custom or a Custom Custom in.
