i'm about to get one strictly for the effects not dist. or amp/cab emulation.
i have a pedalboard for my dirties.
so should i run it with all those or run it through the amp's effects loop?
thoughts?

Re: VOX Tonelab SE

I owned two of the Vox Tonelab SE's, both for short durations of time due to failure. One went into shrill mode and would not stop, the second just fuzzed after about a week of use. However that being said I would still not recommend your intended use. Hooking up the external distortions will more than likely degrade your sound rather than enhance it. After starting out with a Digitech RP 70, then to the RP150, RP355, and now the RP1000, I have finally found a Multi-effects unit I can use with my favorite external stomp boxes with no loss of tone. I know it is much more expensive, but if that is your intent, I would go that route. RP1000 and your effects. By the way I also used a Boss GT-8 for a few months and can tell you IMHO, The RP1000 is a much more realistic tone machine and is much easier to use.

Go through the effects loop. It sounds best that way. I've had the original Tonelab for a few years and never had a problem with it. Sounds great.

Re: VOX Tonelab SE

thanks guys! im getting a super good deal on since its my friends and he doesnt use it no more. so i know it works great. hopefully it wont do that shrill mode thing you were talking about. that being said, if im running the loop, im running it in line-in mode rather than amp mode right?

Re: VOX Tonelab SE

Im might get the m9 or the 13, I tried the tonelab just for the effects and it didnt work because its not true bypass

Re: VOX Tonelab SE

Should work just fine.

I wouldn't underrate some of the capabilities in there. Some things sound very nice. Clean 4x10 emulations. Some vox amp emulation if you don't use the treble/trouble booster in there.

The main nag I have with mine that the routing isn't flexible enough, the order in which the signal passes through things, including the Tonelab's effect loop's place in the line, can't be changed. That would be a nice thing to do if you combine it with a real amp and/or other pedals.

Re: VOX Tonelab SE

I wouldn't use that for an effects unit unless I were also using it for a preamp. If it's anything like the original ToneLab, you can't bypass the preamp section; it's meant to be an integrated unit. Unless I'm wrong, and you really can run the effects without running the amp simulations. I looked at the manual and didn't see a way to do that.

That said, I have the original ToneLab with the big foot controller, and when I need effects, I just use the whole thing into the effects loop of my amp, turn the effects mix to 100%, and have at it. You can still use pedals in front of its amp simulations, and it actually has some decent pedal sims built-in.
