I don't know about the new VT, but I would probably get one of their new AV amps before a small ID amp. Coming from someone who owns and loves an ID 60 head.

Those amps are sexy, i purposely didn't talk about them here cause the aforementioned amps are more disposable than the AV, the AV is a keeper

Since you have an ID head, how do rate it for tone?

Oh, it's great. It took me a long time to dial it in perfect, but now I love it. I don't think it's one of those amps that just sounds great no matter what, but I definitely there's enough for someone to find a versatile set of 3 or 4 sounds that they always use. It outweighs its price tag in tone, that's for sure.

Is the tone, especially the crunchy or OD tones brittle or overly hard clipping. I think my main issue is that I want a smooth overdriven classic rock sound from some of the EL84 settings.

There's definitely a smooth crunch tone to be had. I wouldn't wed yourself to the El84 setting though. It's best to forget the labels of the tube settings and just go by ear. This is why I like the main series a lot more than the ID:Core amps, the three band EQ in addition to resonance and presence controls give you much more flexibility.

I had an ID 30 and it was a great amp.i liked the TVP on it and the amp is modeling different tubes not amps,so for me it was a win win when I got that amp.+they are cheaper now!
