Walters....question for you

I have seen many posts in the forum from you, and I've responded to some.

All this time, I've been wondering what guitars and amplifiers, pedals etc. do you have.

I don't think you have ever mentioned anything specific about your gear.

Just so that we can compare, I have a white Fender strat (Mexican) and an old 1980's Greco 335 copy (Japanese) . I use old Fender tube amps and I am not much of a pedal guy, but I have a Boss Blues Driver.

Thanks

Dave

Re: Walters....question for you

i thought they were rola speakers, which ones?

Re: Walters....question for you

Its a Silver face twin reverb with rola speakers not greenback

Can you tell us more about the amp...what year of SF, any mods that you have done.

I've never heard of rola speakers...I assume that the name of the manufacturer is "rola".

Larry mentioned that you have Strat. Can you tell us more about it.

Any other guitars?

Thanks

Dave

Re: Walters....question for you

i don't know what year it is but fender did switch to rola speakers in the 70's its a silver face with pull out master volume

Re: Walters....question for you

it sounds different when u use the volume parameter from clean is like from 1-3 only and then past that i just gets dirty breaks up alot

Its not a clean amp with alot of headroom like a older peavey they used for pedal steel

Ruby 12Ax7's and Ruby 6L6

The rola speakers are different i think they are lower wattage and don't put out 100watts loud the twin say its 100watts but the rola speakers make it sound like a 30watt or 50 watt its not that loud at all

i don't think im a big fan of Ruby or rola speakers im not to sure, i don't know much about diffreent brands of tubes and brands of speakers this gets very complex with opinions so u have to have alot of money to spead on diferent speakers and tubes and just experiment

Re: Walters....question for you

A '70's silver face Twin sounds like a very nice amp.

I know what you mean by needing a lot of money to experiment with speakers and tubes. I'd like to try some experiments myself...but this stuff certainly can get expensive. My first change would be the speaker in my '74 Princeton Reverb. Somebody took out the 10 inch and put a 12 inch speaker in it. I'd stay with the 12 inch, but I don't know what would be the best choice. Probably a Weber of some sort. Thanks for telling me about the Rolas, I don't think I'd want to try one after what you said about them.

I like to experiment with different Seymour Duncan humbucker pickups...many of which I have bought from other guys in this forum. They aren't too expensive and there are always people selling, trading and buying them. Changing pickups is sort of like getting a new guitar. Have you tried different pickups in your guitar(s)?

Yes, those Rola speakers were really lousy. If I remember, the ones used in the twin reverb were rated something like 30 watts peak power each, so two of them might could handle 30-35 watts RMS before they started breaking up.

Re: Walters....question for you

The rolas sound very gritty when they breakup and they are very very heavy from the speaker magnets they are not clean speakers sounds at all

The preamp does have more gain in this silver twin because of the master volume pull switch increases more gain too
