Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

This thing is detailed in the extreme. It tells of how they were conceived and how they are built. Very good info right there. I'll bet even ole Jeff Seal and ScottF will find some of it to be a worthwhile read.

I daresay - This one may be vault-worthy as it answers questions I've had for a while and have not been able to locate answers for. All the info I've had up till now was very general such as "grids control the flow of electrons". That doesn't tell me much about HOW they do their work. This site tells you how they are constructed and how they work. I often wondered what a "getter" is or why parts of tubes have silver coatings inside the glass (getter flash). Gerald Weber's vids etc don't answer those questions. Maybe his books do, but I don't have them yet.

Re: Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

That centered writing is hard as hell to read, but cool site!

Re: Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

Hey Scott - that's great stuff! Especially the physical "this is how it's made" aspect.

The AX84 Theory document also has a really clear explanation of what tubes do and how they fit into an amp's circuit.

Then there are tons of books, including Kevin O'Connors The Ultimate Tone, Vol. 1

Re: Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

That's pretty cool. Has anyone bought tubes from them?

I have a little old Kay that uses odd ball tubes and am always looking for a good supplier.

Re: Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

That was informative, but it did leave out a few details about what actually happens inside a tube....

#1.. the phase of the signal is reversed 180 degrees at the plate output..
#2.. "squaring" of the signal will occur "unproportionally" towards the plate, since electrons flow from negative (cathode) to positive (plate)
#3.. the operational phase can be reversed by deriving a feed from the cathode
#4.. cathode bypass caps will augment the lower frequencies in the audio spectrum.
#5.. the operating window can be manipulated to offset #2 quite effectively, but only in the guitar amp "world" is this considered desirabale.

There is so much more that goes into an amp design, and since nobody has written anything about that...perhaps that's an area to "explore"

I still would really like to "explain" this to everyone, so I'll see what I can do!!

Re: Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

I work in the radar world, where we use TWT's as a power amp, with ours giving 10KW peak power. I think my project should be incorporating that into guitar amplification...........:smack:

Re: Wanna learn a lot more about tubes?

Cool Jeff. Can't wait to read the additional stuff you can add to make this more complete! Thanks!
