I have a Marshall DSL40C with vintage 30's. my gain is on 5 bla bla.. well the problem is I play metal and If I want a metal sound my ibanez TS9 is a must have in order to get that palm muting sound too . I play A7X, metallica megadeth dio almost every type of metal. I was actually looking at the Bogner Uberschall and I think that It sounds fantastic BUT the price is really high plus the whole thing is like 120Watts and just the head is heavy as ****! Does anyone have any recommendations perhaps?

So, it gets the sound you want when you use the tubescreamer, but you want something different because you want that sound without using the tubescreamer?

Nononono I was just saying that it kinda bothers me because then my amp starts screaming I mean it gets noisy of all the distortion and I have all of my TS settings almost on the middle. I do not like the sound of it I think that it is way to thin and not full. I mean I just don't like the sound of it either for soloing and stuff...

The JVM is a considerable step up from the DSL you could get a used 50W and a 212 cab?
I thought the DSL red channel sounded pretty good but has to be loud.
I think the JVM gets those flavors that draw people to the DSL but the amp just sounds more refined and easier to play somehow.

I have a JVM head and I play DSL40C’s a lot, and I’d describe the JVM as next-next level, if you want to continue with Marshall. I bought my hundred-watter for not much more than a new DSL100H.

Replace it with something old better like a JTM45 elcloneo...

Yep. I get what you mean. That's why I prefer amp distortion too.

Engl does very well what you're after, and they're way more budget friendly than Mesa or Bogner.

If budget is your primary concern, Peavey 6505s are great for that style and they're dirt cheap on the used market.

Re: Wanting to replace my Marshall DSL40C with something new better..?

I get metallica pretty easy on lead 2 gain at 3

Re: Wanting to replace my Marshall DSL40C with something new better..?

peavey 6505 as was stated earlier.
Plus...try winding the gain back on the tubescreamer and compensating with the volume. youll get just as much grit from your preamp tubes being pushed harder. The main reason people use tubescreamers etc for metal is not for more gain but for trimming the low end.
Also before you go buying a new amp, have a look at mixing in some different speakers. you can do a lot with that. You might really dig swamp things.

What do you guys think of Engl Powerball perhaps? :)

Ive always associated Engl with a more modern metal type sound. I did play one once for a few minutes. I really don’t remember the particulars on it though.
I’m sure it’s capable of much more than strictly metal.

Re: Wanting to replace my Marshall DSL40C with something new better..?

Do you play it on low volumes or loud? I can give you a ton of recommendations but it would help if you describe the situation you are playing in and if you prefer a more British or American sound.
There are a lot of options in between a Marshall DSL and a Bogner ubershall. If you VW beetle doesn't go fast enough you don't have to buy a Lamborghini, you can also get a Toyota or Honda :D. Hope you see what I mean here.

The common metal trick with OD pedals is to turn the drive all the way down and the volume up. The TS native mid hump will trim off some bass to make it tighter for palm mutes. this will sound great in a band situation but as a standalone sound it may sound not very pleasing and not saturated enough to give you that oomph.

Re: Wanting to replace my Marshall DSL40C with something new better..?

Yeah low volumes mostly. I don't put it past 2 at home but once I'm at a gig I put it on around 4..
