I am taking out the Celestian GM12-70 out of my MArshall JCM 800 combo. What to put in? I want something to warm it up. I was thinking Vintage 30 any suggestions?

The G12H is great and I also use the Vintage 30s...You could also hook up with the guys at Weber as they have some of the best speakers being made today...These guys put me exactly where I wanted to be with one of my BF Fender amps...I Love the Weber Speakers...Celestions are pretty hard to beat though,I Know..

Celestion 65's.

I have the same speakers in my combo. Why are you changing?

How does the g12h-30 compare to the vintage 30. Are they the same thing?

The G12H 30 was originally loaded into Marshall Bass cabs and handled more power than the Greenback 25s of that era..The Vintage 30 from what I remember was called the sidewinder and was offered in the Marshall Studio 15 amp..I may be wrong but it was the first time I recall ever seeing or hearing this speaker....Later the wattage ratings changed and was renamed the vintage 30...They aren't the same speaker and the G12H 30s are warmer and sweeter, but alot depends on things like, the size of the cabinet, open or closed back etc.. :13:

When I was discussing tone on the board it was suggested to change speakers since that speaker is supposed to be bright. I want to have a little more warmth and since I never hear of anyone using that speaker I thought I would change.

i think a vintage 30 would do nicely, great speakers.

Re: Warm speaker

Your G12M70 speakers (Modern Lead) are already warmer than a Vintage 30 or G12H30. Do you really think you need warmer speakers than what you already have? To be honest, the Modern Leads are some of my least favorite Celestions because compared to the Celestions I like (G12H30, G12M25 and Vintage 30) the G12M70's lack highs! Lew

Re: Warm speaker

Just because something has more bass response, doesn't make it "Warmer".

Otherwise, everybody would be using 5150 cabs.

He's trying to soften his tone, and he's on the right path.

I didn't say the Modern Lead had more bass response. I said it has less treble than the Vintage 30 and the G12H30. And it does have less treble...it's a smoother sounding speaker and the other two are both brighter. I'm very familar with all of those speakers. I've owned all of them over the years and compared them directly to each other in Marshall 4x12 bottems as well as in Fender and Marshall combo amps. If Reckless Abandon is looking for a warmer tone than the G12M70 Modern Leads he already has, he's barking up the wrong tree with the Vintage 30...and the G12H30 too, bcuase both are brighter, not warmer, than what he already has. That said, I much prefer the either Vintage 30 or the G12H30 to the G12M70. Lew

They would warm up my amp and give me a thicker tone?
a little help on your question. this is just what ive noticed about vintage 30's. I play fender strats thru differant amps. right now Ime down to just 3 amps. I have a triaxis, rectoverb, and rocket 44 with 4 10inch webers. after playing thru marshals for years and loveing celestions I wanted something that would clean up nice for a change. I went on my quest all over hell so to speak looking around. My favorite speaker ended up being celestion vintage 30's. they have a bright top end that accents gain very nice, and clean tones well. they also have a tight bottom not super deep but deep midrange clip tone but not muddy. I got the rocket 44 with the 4 ten webbers. somebody told me"ahhhh those 10 inch webbers sound good clean" and they do, but they sound like 10 inch speakers kinda more trebley and they can sparkle nice but get unpleasant squeeky high overtones as well. I ran the same amp into 2 2/12 vintage 30's cabs and got 90% of the spanky clean sound with no unpleasant trebley overtones, and still can switch to distortion and get wicked gainey clip, not quite as deep as 1 4/12 vintage 30's cab but 90% there and it sounds more defined especialy on solo's and so much easier to get in my car than my 4/12 cab. for good cleans-theres better but not significantly better-tones and for punchy wonderful gainey clip tones-again there is probabley something better but not much trust me-thies are the best all around speakers I have ever played. check out botique amp company sights-ya know ridiculas priced amps-those companys are useing them too so its not just me-almost every one likes them unless your amp and guitar is a hunk of sh*t

Re: Warm speaker

And I totally dislike the 70 watt Celestions..I think the mids are scooped out for the metal players...With Celestions, for me it's either the G12H 30s or Vintage 30s....I don't care for the modern 25 watters either...

Yep. That's kinda my opinion too! The G12M70's just don't sound lively to me...they sound dull and flat. I mean, compared to most crappy speakers out there, the G12M70's rule...but compare them to a V30 or G12H30 and IMO, the G12M70's don't sound as textured or as interesting.

Lew so the V 30's will have more mid response? I could deal with the treble if I get more mids. There is just something I do not like about that speaker (g12m-70). I guess dull and flat is right. I want a livlier tone. I am messing with pups as you know and it is time to try a new speaker.

What threw me off was your mention of wanting a warmer tone. To me, "warmer" means softer highs and a less biting or crispy tone with less treble.

So if it's a livlier tone you want, how about going for a combination of the Vintage 30 and the G12H30? THAT is a very happening tone!

As for mids...I don't really hear the G12M70 as lacking mids...they're just not especially lively or textrued or complex IMO.

All these words get in the way sometimes...they're supposed to help convey an idea but sometimes the same words creates a differant picture in one person's mind then it does in my own! :)

It would help if I wasn't an idiot!1 :)
Sometimes I do not even know what I want.
I want more midrange texture without too much added brightness. If the speaker was better sounding than the one I have I could deal with a touch more brightness.
