Warmoth neck shapes

I have a quick question about the back shapes Warmoth offers. Their "standard" seems to be your basic Strat neck C-shape, but I was wondering if the boatneck and fatback shapes compared to any production guitars (LP '59 shape, Tele, etc). I've never played on a Warmoth neck, so I need to look elsewhere for comparison as I'd like to go by something other than their artistic rendition.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

I am not sure they compare to the necks you are fimilair with but, Warmoth makes a 59 round back profile if you like that. I am pretty sure the fatback and boatnecks are even bigger than that.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

Those two definitely look pretty meaty. I love the neck on my Wolfgang, but I want to go with a symmetrical shape on this project so I'm probably going to go with the standard shape. The Clapton (V-shape) looks nice, but I can't justify an extra $35 for it :).

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

I like their Wolfgang backshape, as well as the SRV. I'm not a fan of the standard shapes, I think their standard thin is too thin and the boatneck and fatback are too thick. If you want a thicker neck that's nice and chunky without feeling like a baseball bat, go with the Wolfgang shape. They also offer a '59 roundback profile, but they don't list the dimensions on the web site. I'm assuming it's similar in profile to a 50's style Les Paul neck.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

your going to have to add 35$ to any profile thats not one of their standards (i forgot exactly which ones are standard). i went with the 59 roundback and love it. its basically their Les Paul profile, so if you like those necks, thats your choice. if you like wolfgangs, why not just get one of those? and by the way, 35$ is justification for any one of those back shapes, its worth getting what you really want.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

Let me ask you this:
what do you REALLY want?

what shape, what depth, what frets, how much taper, etc, etc

Warmoth's "standard thin" is NOT a C-shape neck, IMO, but rather, a shallow "D profile", combined with a compound 10/16" radius ... reallly, kind of a shredder's neck, IMO

to me, this is the most critical element of a guitar's playability, so don't shortchange yourself

it also depends on your style of play, your favorite necks, etc

IMO, as much as I like Warmoth's stuff, USA Custom Guitars has a more systematic approach, without the upcharges :)

just PM me for more info, and I'll try to help

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

Well, I haven't really found what could be construed "MY" neck shape yet. I really like the shape on my Schecter C1, the C-neck on the Strat I owned years ago, and I like the neck on my Wolfgang. The Wizard 2 on my RG tends to fatigue my hand (I have very long, skinny hands, think Vai-shaped). I will have 6105 frets, and I like the depth on the Wolfgang but I tend to think that a symmetrical version of the Wolfie neck (without the thicker bass side, use the treble side's shape/thickness all around) would be very very nice. The compound radius will probably fit me very well also.

I hadn't heard of USA Custom before, I'll check into that for sure.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

I have a Strat with the boatneck contour, and it's pretty meaty. Definately not a shreddin-type neck. Though I really like this profile, it's not really for everyone, lotsa wood there. It is however, very symetrical.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

$35 is nothing...I wouldn't recommend a Warmoth project if you're not willing to spend the money to get it exactly the way you want it. If you end up not liking the back shape, you're not going to want to play the guitar. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra cash on one of the custom back shapes.

Re: Warmoth neck shapes

Yeah, I'm going to bump up my neck budget to around $250 or so, it'll be worth it. I really like the options USA Custom allows for. Their "The '54" back shape is killer.

"The '54 - .850" Soft V going to a C with a .090"+ taper"

Pair that with their 7.25" - 9.5" compound radius... tasty!!
