Warmoth Neck - tuner question

ok... so I am gathering parts for my project. I had my Warmoth neck drilled for Schaller tuners, thinking I would use standard Fender Schaller tuners (the OEM kind) or possibly Sperzel locking tuners (which tend to fit the same opening). Now I'm reading that the Warmoth Schaller holes are actually for the min-locking tuners that Warmoth sells on its site. Any idea on this? Looks like the size is 11/32, 25/64... will standard Sperzel tuners work, or even the Fender OEM?

Sperzels have specs for 25/64, but I wasn't sure if they will work given that the holes are actually tapered.

I didn't notice this until afterwards... when I read "Schaller" I figured standard Fender Schallers, not the mini-tuners. GRRR!!! A little deceptive if you ask me.

Thx.

Re: Warmoth Neck - tuner question

Vintage fender/kluson style are an 11/32 bushing pressed into the front.

Re: Warmoth Neck - tuner question

Looks like Gotoh makes a m6 style locking tuner that should fit... they require a 10mm hole, which is the same as 11/32... although I found standard Schaller made in Germany tuners for $55. I prefer locking tuners however. Also looking at the Hipshot tuners.

Re: Warmoth Neck - tuner question

My mistake, I was getting all these measurements confused. This is nutty. So many different tuners with marginally different tuner hole reams. Just dumb. You would think that Warmoth, making a Fender licensed neck, would have a standard tuner hole that match with the standard Fender tuner (the "Schaller-style they use now") but the "standard" Warmoth ream is actually the smaller vintage size.

I didn't want the vinatage tuners, so I selected the "Schaller" size thinking it was the current Fender Schaller (which is now Ping) tuner size. Unfortunately, for some reason they mean the Schaller M6 tapered ream.

Anyway, I would have just gone with the larger 25/64 holes if I realized that "Schaller" didn't mean "Fender/Schaller"

Edit - its ok, I'll get through it... LOL

I realized a long time back that you are much better off buying the tuners you are going to use and having them actually in your hand before you order the neck...saves a lot of hassle!

The phrase 'never assume' is perhaps made for these circumstances.

Firstly as 'Fender licenced' only means they can copy the shape without litigation. It certainly doesn't mean or imply they they have to or are going to follow Fender in any other way.
I mean they have all the info on tuner drillings on the website.....what they refer to and detailed diagrams of the cross-section.....precisely so you can use it to choose your tuners. They also stock the tuners they do drilling for in almost all cases (or used to at least) to make things simpler for hardware sourcing.

What you are suffering, of course, is 'inexperienced builder' syndrome. We've all suffered it and learned from the experience. But most of us accept we are at fault from our assumptions, rather than trying to imply the supplier is making some sort of gross misjudgment.

Re: Warmoth Neck - tuner question

I respectfully disagree. I've built many guitars, but this is the first time I've purchased directly from Warmoth. While it is an assumption on my part, for sure, I would think that most people who have worked with Fender necks would "assume" that Schaller tuners are the stock modern tuners on a Fender guitar. I realize that Schaller tuners have been replaced by a PING knock-off of their tuners on Fender guitars as of recently, but my guess would be that most people who hear "Fender neck" and "Schaller tuners" would not be thinking of the Schaller M6 tuner.

But, I agree that it was my mistake and I should have reviewed the tuner hole specifications before ordering.

As to my implication of deception - perhaps that is a bit much, but certainly confusing for a customer. They sell a FEW of the tuning machines (namely, Gotoh vintage and SG38, Schaller m6 and some other brand named Snakehead) and to simply post "Schaller" in the ordering box and not "Schaller m6" is somewhat deceptive since their could be people who do not think of Schaller as the m6 tuner. (Not to mention that they sell the m6 tuner for $13 a tuner for the chrome style = $78 a set). That's like just listing "Gotoh" in the ordering box and then wondering why you have people who wanted a vintage Gotoh tuner ream but you gave them a modern hole. (which, in fact they do... they sell Gotoh vintage tuners and also the modern size, but in the orderingbox they list Gotoh and then below they list a separate "vintage" size, even though the vintage size tuner they sell Gotoh). Anyway, just confusing.

I did contact Warmoth to ask which would fit this opening and they were great about getting back to me. They agreed that all the different sizes are very confusing. Anyway, was just a little frazzled when I posted above.

Thanks for all the replies. steve
