Partsocaster parts arrived today!

Swamp ash 4 pound lightweight body routed for a humbucker in the neck.

Neck is a 10-16 inch compound radius roswewood board maple neck with side adjust for the truss rod. Vintage satin nitro finish. 6150 frets and a standard thin back contour.

A bit of lemon oil for the rosewood:

After a light sand, first coat of staining with "american oak" color:

second coat of stain:

Just curious, but were these straight out of the Showcase, or were they custom order? That aside, what's going on there, how does the rest of the build come together?

showcase. There are plenty to choose from, and i like seeing the pics of the grain and knowing the weight of the stuff before i buy it. You can still get modifications done with showcase bodies and necks, like your choice of frets or nut, and various pickup routs etc. - or even paintjob if thats what you want.

The next stage is french polish, then bolt the hardware and electronics on. French polish is cool cos it can be as thin as you like. It has a soft sheen and patina when its new and it ages fairly quickly. It cracks like old nitro and will flake off in high wear areas. The other cool thing about it is that if i want to keep it looking fresh, or the cracking gets too extreme, you can wipe it down with methylated spirits to thin the worn areas and add more coats. The one i'm using has a kind of vintagey yellow tinge to it too. It is more time consuming than poly or nitro and is a lot softer too, which is why they stopped using it in manufacture. You still find plenty of old pianos with french polish tho and it looks way cool. It also allows the wood to breathe.
The pickups are ready to go but im waiting for the other hardware. I thought if i had the hardware ready to go, i will be tempted to kinda rush the finishing so i held off on ordering.

I like the honey color that you got with that stain, it should look very nice with the Rose Wood FB. What color hardware, pick guard, and PU's? What make and model PU's?

Yeah. I really love the fretboard. Just out of curiosity, did you apply more stain to the bottom half of the body than the top? Or did it just naturally come out looking a little darker? Or is that just the camera?

neck was 250 ish finished in nitro and with a tusq nut installed.
body was 175 unfinished.
postage to australia was pretty expensive tho!

you'll see the final recipe. Black scratchplate, pearly gates in the neck, jerry donahue in the bridge and after i have the bridge setup and the action nice and fast, ill screw a bigsby B5 into the body. Yeh i reckon it will do crusty's amp work proud, although this as a project has nothing on his les paul.

first application of what will be many many coats of insect poo:

I've made the shellac mix really thin so it soaks into the fairly prominent grain pretty easily and dries almost instantly (and more importantly evenly)

use plenty of ventilation and fans and preferably a gas mask. That stuff is nasty for the lungs.

here is how its going after 7 or 8 super thin coats. Still soaking in but starting to show some shine. I thought id compare it to a pic of a 52 butterscotch. different finish of course but its cool to compare.

You made some nice choices on woods and finishes. I have two Warmoth Teles and couldn't be happier with them (a traditional with a Broadcaster pup in the bridge and vintage in the neck; and a 72 Thinline with two SD humbuckers - Full Shred and Screamin' Demon in the bridge). What pickups did you choose?
