I always see on here that I should find my own sound and such but I'm trying to learn a few Ratt songs to play at a party and I'd like to get as close as I can to Warren Demartini's sound. What I'm working with is a Gibson Les Paul with 490/JB and a peavy vypyr 30. I'm having a really hard time getting even close to his sound. I know that it's mainly in the fingers but if anyone has any advice on how to get as close as I can with this gear I'd really appreciate it!

imagine a guitar with an alder body and maple neck and 80s JB and Floyd going into Marshall heads and cabs w/ 25w Celestions.
for a slightly more recent rig, there's this:
and work out how that would translate to what you're working with. start with that midrange honk, find the right amount of gain, tweak in the rest.

The Les Paul is all wrong. The JB in the LP may be wrong. Still, considering that, some extreme EQ on decent Marshall model and careful delay settings....
His stuff is pretty dry, IMO, except for some digital delay (back in the day - ignore that recent analog crap). Early Ratt = DD-3

Early Ratt = Lexicon PCM-41 Delay
At least his 1987 Live rig (the DD-3 came out in 86)
But for all intents and purposes, any digital delay will get you there.

Everybody's talking about pickups, guitars, and effects but since this is the amp room and you specifically called out your Vypyr in the thread title, I'll point out the obvious: start with a Soldano SLO model if your amp has one. If not, try a boosted JCM800 or plexi model.

Just use your ears.
Even if some dude nails it on his amp, you have different hands and a different guitar and you're in a different room.
Very little about playing an instrument is set in stone.

I need to make a really great supreme pizza. What I've got to work with is some ground beef, cheese and a bun. But cooking is mainly in the seasoning, innit?
I don't want to discourage, but IME, I think to get it down to where the difference is really the fingers, at least some parts of the recipe need to be the same or similar.

I bought my Charvel San Dimas Style 1 specifically to ape Martini tones. It has all the major elements of his obscenely expensive signature models, including the bolt on maple neck, maple fretboard, Floyd, and JB at the bridge. The very first riff I played in what I call Old School/800 Mode on my Marshall was Lay it Down---and that was IT!! Nailed.
My other guitars with the Distortion don't nail it the same way, it's got to be the JB.
Don't forget Robin's contribution either. The thing that really got me into RATT as a kid was the rhythm tones. Easily some of the coolest riffs and tones of the decade.

And you can get that sound with the first-gen Vypyr, but I will say you'd be better off selling that 30W for $75 and spending $150 or so for a used 60W or 120W "Tube" Vypyr model if you want a cheap modeling amp...they are a MUCH better sounding amp all around compared to the Vypyr 30, IMO.
