Washburn Idol Series??

I'm looking for a back-up/second guitar for my SG Standard. I'm looking for something similar to the SG body shape and style, but not too similar. The Idol series caught my eye visually and the magazine reviews I've read have been favorable (particularly for the 64 and 68 models). Obviously, pickup and tuner changes are mandatory, but are they good guitars? Has anyone had experience with them? If they're not any good, could anyone reccomend something else?

Re: Washburn Idol Series??

In their price range, Washburns are almost impossible to beat. The Idols and their semihollows from $500 on up are all amazingly better than their competitors. It's very likely that one of those better Idol models would become your #1 guitar, not #2. The priciest Washburns are really nice, but fall head to head with Gibson and PRS, which makes them difficult to sell. The ones in the $700 price range feel like $1300 guitars.

I have a WI66 and it is fantastic. A set of Seths and new 500k pots and it is just unbelievable and has the Feiten system also. Fantastic choice.

i have the washburn WI65C. It's a pretty nice guitar for the money. It came stock with a custom custom/'59.. Buzz feiten system.. and grover tuners. It has what Washburn calls voice contour controls instead of tone controlls for the pickups... The VC is supposed to allow you to give the hums more of a single coil sound.

Mine had this too. It was a neat idea and it worked well. I wanted the vintage 'buckers. I was looking for vintage so I gutted it in favor of a more vintage toned circuit.

Re: Washburn Idol Series??

I may get one of those 335 copies. For a guitar that won't ever be my 'main guitar', I'd rather get a 335 for $450 than $1800. Of course a Gibson 335 is better, but Gibson will never make a guitar as good as the Washburn for less than $500.

I played one and was disapointed

It sounded just bright and characterless...
