Ways of attaching pedals to a pedalboard?

Hey guys.

I'm having 2 new pedalboards made (1 for fx before amp, and 1 for fx in the loop), and am trying to think of how to attach the pedals to the boards.

In the past I have used 2 strips of velcro on the bottom of each pedal, and was just wondering if there's a better way of attaching pedals to the board?

Thanx for any info.

Depends on how you define "better". Some folks drill holes in the board and use loop ties to secure the stompbox. Others will find bolts that match the size of those used to secure the pedal's bottom plate and screw the pedal to the board. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages.

Personally, I just put as much velcro on the bottom of the pedal as possible.

same here. Velco!

One option you could consider if you like the Velcro idea, but don't want to ruin the bottom of your pedals, is to make a new bottomplate from plastic or something, stick velcro to that and screw it on your pedal. You can then store the original bottom plate and it stays in nice minty condition. :)

If you don't move pedals around very much then I think the bolting idea is great (except for changing batteries.... then again, if you use a power supply, it makes no difference!)

I used to screw them to the board the way aleclee stated, but Velcro works just as well and is more "flexible" as far as layout goes ;)

One problem with velcro strips is that they don't stick very well, and usually pull free when carrying the board. I use rubber cement to stick the velcro to the bottom of my pedals, while making sure not to get it on any of the labels on the bottoms of the pedals. If I sell the pedal, I can usually rub off all the rubber cement residue with my thumb, then the pedal looks like new. Plus, the velcro doesn't come loose from the pedal like it does without the rubber cement.

Thanx for the posts guys.

In the past I've used a hot glue gun to stick the velcro to the bottom of the pedals, so I guess I'll carry on doing that :)

I remember reading about something that was made from 2 bits of 'male' velcro that snapped together, and was extremely strong. Has anyone else heard about anything like this?

velcro doesnt stick to the bottom of pedals unless you use some sort of cement, which goops up the pedals. I use zip ties.

gaffa tape, leaving just the pedal latch free and the knobs *just* visible

no scratches that way :)

Re: Ways of attaching pedals to a pedalboard?

I use a block of wood pressed against the pedal, and then I screw it down. Works well, but all of the above will work equally well.

Thanx for the replies guys.

I guess I'll stick to hot gluing the velcro to my pedals :D

Thanx for the ideas anyway :)

I just surround my pedals with strips of wood to hold them in place. They don`t move one bit unless I pull them out. No tapes here :)

Re: Ways of attaching pedals to a pedalboard?

lol but you can always think of something else fun to do with the duct tape.. i just always have a roll in my case, sticks plectrums to mic stands, holds leads together, loadsa stuff..

its kind of a botch-job solution i've never thought serious enough to fix :D

Re: Ways of attaching pedals to a pedalboard?

This may not work so well for a pedal-board that you need to carry around, but for home / studio use, I used a router to create ‘depressions’ on a wooden pedal-board.
The pedals drop in the slots without any Velcro or glue.
The only downside is you can’t move your pedals around to different locations unless they are the same size.

Note: You can line the depressions with felt for a tight scratch-free fit

Thanx for the new replies.

Surrounding the pedals with wood is a good idea, but I'm a little concerned as to how much weight it will add to the board, as I'm trying to keep it as compact and light as possible.

Radio shack shure lock strips are the best. Like velcro but stiff plastic hook/hook design.

I think this may have been what I was thinking of when I mentioned "the product that was like two pieces of male velcro that snapped together". Is there anywhere online where I could buy this shure lock strips? As I live in the UK and don't have Radio Shack over here :)

i use the industrial velcro (about the same size as a pedal) from your local hardware store. and for those fussy wahs and pedals that dont wanna stick to the velcro, I use the plastic security ties. that oughta hold em!
