WCR pickups - help

Re: WCR pickups - help

Let me help you...save a lot of money and buy some Duncans!

The WCR stuff is nice I guess but the truth is I always end up coming back to Duncan pickups...they just work!

Re: WCR pickups - help

If you're just ordering a pickup, you don't have to worry about the slugs AFAIK. I have a set of Fillmore's coming that I acquired for dirt cheap, it will be interesting to see how they stack up to the Suhr Humbuckers I have in a couple guitars (which are a bit better to me than most Duncans I've tried). I played a guitar with a set of WCR Crossroads in it once and they sounded nice (like a better balanced '59 set), but they weren't like a holy revelation or anything.

Re: WCR pickups - help

You are not helping...

I'm ordering a set of pickups and I'd like to know what the slugs are because I need gold if I have to get them.

Re: WCR pickups - help

A standard PAF kinda HB has two bobins, right! One with 6 screws, and the other with 6 slugs. ;)

If you wanna get a non covered pickup, get 6 gold slugs and 6 gold screws, regular PAF construction. If the HB you wanna get is covered, you don't need 6 gold slugs (but still need 6 golden screws) becuase they would be covered anyways. But I'd rather get it with 6 golden screws even with covers, because you could take the covers off in the future.

Hope this helps.

You sure you want the goodwoods? I thought their crossroads set is da killah?

Haven't played either set, just read great comments for most of Jim's sets. Godwoods have just a little more output than crossroads who are his PAFs.

Re: WCR pickups - help

Goodwood to SD 59s(may be compared to 59ers)

Oh no that Goodwoods are not just a crossroads with more output!
to me I had GW and SD59ers in a orville LP - they are different animals-
the GW is very juicy and full - they wd not suit in a typical LP (mahogony, mapple cover and rosewood fretboard).
I found the 59s (more likely as crossroads) better for the band - context.
you know the GW Brigde was full and juicy played alone wowwwww!!!
But you must consider the band you are playing. If you are too juicy you cannot get through and get some muddy. if you know what I mean.
The demos at WCR are really "must have" sounding. :naughty:
I must say that wagner put sthg special in his PUPs to be different (some say unique/better).
so the 59er maybe similar to crossroads at least in output and "vintage" style.

Fillmore...Darkbursts ...
the fillmore is ,too very juicy I am interessted in the darkburst too.
Yeah it wd be good to have em all... SD and WCR set.
Why not :scratchch

For now I have a set of 59ers in my orville.
yesterday I missed a little more bottom from the bridge - with the engl amp.
with the JTM45 2x12er box and zvex box of rock if have enough bottom.
amazing what a difference...
have fun with yr WCR Goodwood Bridge? (if am I right)

That's what I'm looking for. My LP is not a typical LP. It's bolt on, 25,5 radius, Wenge/Kingwood neck, SS frets. I always like to try new things and the time for WCR has come...:) Thanks for the description:fing2:

Re: WCR pickups - help

Why don't you look into Zhang's buckers? He is very cool, and tons of people love them especially over on the LPF.

Them WCRs didn't do it for me. I have tried (through buying and selling) some of his over the years, but apart from the Crossroads (which I think is not too special) it does not do it for me.

But Wolfe's pickups did work for me. I'd say, check them out. And he is a very nice guy, can wind you a little hotter pickups to offset the fact that you don't have a Gibson neck scale (which therefore would sound a bit different).

Dunno them motor city pickups, yet heard good things about them.

Good luck,

B
