WGS Virgin

I just got my first taste of WGS speakers, an ET65. I just bought a used one on the HC Forum and it sounds great. I finally got rid of the Marshall Goldback I was using. Man, I hated that speaker.

Who else uses these WGS speakers and what is a good combo to use with the ET-65 for a 2x12 cab.

Re: WGS Virgin

I do!

Retro 30s mixed with Celestion G12-65s (which is what the ET65s are based on). The Retro 30s are a great variation on the Vintage 30 sound - tight lows, crisp, crunchy mids and highs. The nice thing about the Retro is that it has a bit of shimmer in the highs as well, in addition to the mids being not as spikey/nasal sounding as the Vintage 30.

Funnily enough, as a complement to the ET65, WGS suggests their other variation on the Vintage 30 - the Veteran 30.

That said, when I contacted them about recommendations to pair with my G12-65's, they also suggested the Reapers and HP Reapers.

Re: WGS Virgin

Speakers boggle my mind.. so many diff ones How do you choose? its worse than shopping for pickups.. So many to choose from and all.. they make such a huge difference. The one time I changed a speaker, the tonal change was enormous. changed a stock speaker out of my PV classic 30 to an Eminence private jack..

I have heard the WGS are good tho!

Re: WGS Virgin

Been running WGS stuff for a while now. Right now I have a Vet 30 in my Blackstar 1/12 and a Retro 30 in my 1990 JCM 900 MK III Dual Master 2501 1/12 combo. The tone of the little combo on the Blackstar is stunning!! BIG FAT and tight but with a lot of definition and nice cut this set up is flat jaw dropping good sounding. Although WGS is not recommending this combo in particular I will strongly. If this pair together is any indication a 2/12 cab with a Vet and Retro will be on BAD MOFO!! As far as the 65 I have yet to try it so don't know.

I agree with you on the Retro. The Vet 30 is fatter and a little tighter but the retro is really clear and crisp from what i hear on the WGS site I would think the Retro would be the better match.
The Vet is better to fill out the tone of an open back cab the Retro better in closed backs. The Vet deeper and fuller the Retro more sparkling and cutting. Both are GREAT sounding speakers and used together as a pair are stunningly good.

Re: WGS Virgin

I have a WGS Green Beret and a Celestion Greenback (G12M) in a Randall 2x12 cab... I think I am going to get rid of the WGS and replace it with another Greenback or a Celestion 70th anni G12H. I think the WGS sounds worse, but I should probably do some more recording comparisons to know for sure...

I've had Green Berets for a while and love 'em. They sound much better once they're broken in I found.

Re: WGS Virgin

I'm thinking about throwing a WGS ET65 into my 2x12 with a V30 to see how I like it.

If my Governor/Wizard combo is any indication, the Reaper might be a GREAT pairing.

This is also another speaker combination I want to try.

I think it sounds phenomenal with a Soldano voicing. It should work perfectly for you. Huge sound with great articulation, and no frequencies overpowering.

Re: WGS Virgin

I run a retro/et65 with an eldiablo 60 head.

My el d 60 combo has an et65.

I REALLY like the et65.

The retro is good when mixed with a warmer speaker like the et65. On it's own, i don't care for it at all.

I tried an et65/reaper 50 for a very short time but don't remember much beyond i liked it more than the retro/et combo.

Sounds like pretty much what I want tbh!

I thought this thread might end up costing me money!! :D

Re: WGS Virgin

Nice one. I'm using an ET65 in a 1x12" with my Tubemeister and I love it.

Re: WGS Virgin

The ET-65 is the only WGS speaker that didn't WOW me. It sounds fine, but just doesn't stand out in any respect compared to others. I think it's a very safe speaker to be honest.
I like and use Veteran and Retro 30's personally. I'm a V30 guy though. I like the punch, presence and edge. Speakers with lower efficiency tend to end up aggravating me and leave me feeling unfulfilled.
