What about a 2/5 pickup?

The 5/2 has A5 mags on the bass and A2 on the treble. Interesting, but exactly opposite of the sides I prefer. I like the A2 on the bass side to reduce that percussive boom of an A5, but prefer the chime of an A5 on the treble side.

Would this even work or make any sense whatsoever?? I'm pretty sure this is one of the things I'm overthinking. Anybody else ever thought of this?

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

I love a A5 for the neck pickup and an A2 for the bridge.
A5 in the neck means you have great clarity and sparkle, and it never becomes muddy.
And an A2 in the bridge smoothes things out and prevents the harsh brittle attack of some bridge pups.
Same principal in the 5/2

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

I think what he's talking about is putting both A2s and A5s in one pickup (like the 5/2, but in a 2/5 combo), not putting an A5 pickup in the bridge and A2 pickup in the neck.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

The good doctor has it correct. I'm thinking of a reverse of the current SD 5/2 pickup.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

I didn't know that Duncan was doing this. Just half sized mags sitting next to each other? If so, just flip them around. You can do anything you want. I'd go 4 on the bass side and 2 on top. For the bridge anyway. But then I'd have to saw a 4 in half.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

I guess I should have clarified. I'm talking about the pole pieces in the 5/2 Strat pickups. I'm at least 60% sure that I can't flip those around.

I shouldn't expect that I would be able to throw out a random, half thought out idea and expect everyone to follow it. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

So why not just flip the PU, and get the magnets where you want them? Report back when you're done.

Mainly because I wasn't smart enough to think of this idea.

The stagger will throw it off a bit, but not too much....hmmmmmmm.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

Yep, flip that sucker. Forget the stagger, the worst that could happen is you get a cool Hendrix visual thing happening.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

I was under the impression that there was not enough lead to flip it without stressing the connections, otherwise I would've suggested rotating the pickup earlier. That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Anyhoo, the pole pieces are the same diameter, just charged differently. As long as the windings won't collapse when you remove a pole piece completely, I'd say pop them puppies out and swap them around.

The stagger's easy enough to fix as well - push them up or down to get the height you want.

Re: What about a 2/5 pickup?

DO NOT TRY AND REMOVE THE MAGNETS!!!

you will probably break the winding and kill the pup, even trying to push on those magnets isnt a good idea on a vintage style single coil. the only time you could do this is if the bobbins are molded plastic and the coil is not in contact with the magnets. if you have the room to flip the pup go ahead but the bottom bobbin may not fit in the rout if flipped
