dunno. never tried a ss plug in recto. the 5v4 pushes the amp a little more towards that so the ss might do even more. the tweed amps are quite different in some ways than the brown so im sure there would still be plenty of differences

For years I tried to get Billy's tone out my Marshalls, "Tush" etc. Got close, but never quite got there. Then I found out he was using small amps in the studio. Well, crap!

But...when I bought my Mark V, I quickly discovered his tone, using the TWEED mode, 10-watt power, tube rectifier, tweed voltage, on the clean channel. MAGIC! Using my LP 1960 Classic with its Antiquity HBs...hot damn! Put the biggest smile on my face. I really wish Mesa would have put this mode in the second CRUNCH channel, so I could switch between this tone and clean settings. It's just the perfect mix of clean dirt, crunch, sag and compression. Most high gain amps amps today can't do these pushed small amp tones, and a pedal? Forget it!

I realize that many players today crave high-gain, crushing amounts of distortion, but many of rock's greatest tones use only a modest amount of distortion.

Ha! I started reading this thread and when got to the point where I thought TGWIF was back I looked at the dates.

I have an Allen Brown Sugar kit I need to assemble.

Fender, for sure..Brownface deluxe, or tweed deluxe, will get it..Blackface won't get it with out overdrive pedals.Everyone talks about the early Marshall because they seen Billy live, using them. I live in Nashville and am a session player. Tom Lawnie, an engineer on a bigger project I was tracking, was assistant engineer on one of there earlier albums. He stated that there were tiny amps all over the studio, getting most of those huge tones..Fenders, Alamos, and such. I know he has used the Marshalls for sure in the studio. But Brown Sugar is just so tweed/brownface. I own a 62 Brownface..It nails that song..

I have always said never bet on what got the sound. Studio engineers, producers, etc...will do ANYTHING to get the sound. They are not the gear snobs all of us are. they listen to things as the WILL sound on the recording, in the mix. Not how you hear them in isolation and want them to sound good.
