What are good replacements for..?

A Hamer Artist Korina HB? The 59s that are in it are nice, but they seem to have a little more top end than I would like. Since it is a semi hollow body, set neck, all korina with a rosewood fretboard, what pickups would compliment this guitar the most? I'm looking for something super smooth with good sustain in the neck and something with great harmonics and a good mid spike for the bridge. I don't like bright sounding pickups, and no mud while I'm at it.

Re: What are good replacements for..?

If you want to retain a similar output to the '59s but lose some top end and boost the mids, your best bet is to switch to an alnico II PAF type pickup. That will give you the added smoothness you require. I can highly recommend the Seth Lovers - similar output to '59s but smoother and warmer. You might also consider Antiquities, Pearly Gates and Alnico II Pros.

Re: What are good replacements for..?

I generally prefer higher output pickups, but I'm a little worried that high output pickups wouldn't sound as good in this guitar. The one thing I love about it is the purity of tone.

Seths

that's what Hamer uses in the Artist and Artist Custom.

They must feel that '59s are better suited for the mahogany and korina models, though.

Re: What are good replacements for..?

I use a Seth Lover neck and Custom Custom bridge in my Hamer Monoco. Sounds great! Not as bright as the 59's, softer bass, and lots of fat mids. If you really want a mid spike, the JB might be a good choice but I like the CC better...it's easier on my ears. Lew

Re: What are good replacements for..?

Lew, do you think the CC/Seth would be a good combo for the Korina? I really like the way the eq curve of the CC looks but I'm torn on the neck pickup. A lot of people have suggested Seths, Antiquities, Pearly Gates and APH (as you can see from the posts above). I do most of my soloing in the neck and I love a smooth creamy tone with gobs of sustain. I'm finding the 59s have just a little too much highs for my taste.

Thanks

Antiquities would sound great with that wood. So would a set of Phat Cats. The PCs have a nice midrange bump, and that sweet neck tone you're talking about.
