What are the tone differences between Alnico II and V

Re: What are the tone differences between Alnico II and V

IMO the diff. is on the bass and treble. on the V it has a bigger bass and treble making it sound "scooped". on the II it has less bass and treble making the mids stand out more. also because of the IIs lesser treble, it sounds sweeter than the V.

The 5s have a more bass and treble and usually sound brighter while the 2s are more mid orientated and warm and often used to round a very bright guitar.

The 5s have more cobalt in the AlNiCo alloy. To the ear, they have sharper attack and hold the note longer before distortion.

I pretty much agree with everything already said but I would add that alnico 2 seems to compress just a little when I dig in with my pick and allows me to shape the note with my picking attack a little more easily than alnico 5 and that all other things being equal, alnico 5 seems to have a clearer tone for chords with tighter bass and more sparkle to the highs. In a Strat I tend to like alnico 5 for the neck & middle pickups and alnico 2 for the bridge pickup. In a humbucker guitar I like a2 or a5 about equally and use either or a combination of a2 & a5.
