what attenuator

alright i've decided that i pretty much need an attenuator to get the tone i want. i use a 100 watt boogie nomad 100. i want to get a weber mass but the only one i see that might take my amp is the 150. are there any other attenuators for less than 225 that won't affect the tone but will take my amp wattage?

edit: and will the 150 take my amp?

Re: what attenuator

ALL attenuators effect the tone and the more you attenuate the signal the more it effects tone!

Also, keep in mind...you are not going to be able to attenuate a 100 watt amp down low enough to use in your bedroom...

Other attenuators you could look into are the

Dr. Z Airbrake but it is only rated at 100 watts...

The THD Hot Plate but it locks you into one impedence

The Ultimate Attenuator, I didn't think it sounded any better or worse than any other attenuator I tried and it costs over $500

The otgers that come to mind are the Tom Scholtz Power Soak and the Marshall Power Brake but I NEVER suggest them to anybody as they are VERY hard on the amp.

I tried lots of attenuators and the one I ended up with is the Weber Mass...if you want the 150 but don't want the big version with all the tone controls and such (BTW...the tone controls do not work unlkess you are using the Mass for DI use) you can call Weber and order a Mass Lite which is the Mass 100 or Mass 150 without the DI tone controls and it's a little less money.

so does the mass afect the tone at all?

As picky as I am about tone, I would not own and use one if it did not deliver. I have done countless gigs with that thing, very rugged. The response I get from folks about my tone is overwhelmingly positive.

Like Fire says, if your plan is to run it very quiet and only use it for that purpose, you will get coloration. With one of my cabs, it sounds great at very low levels, due to the efficiency of the speakers, I actually am amazed at how good it sounds. With another of my cabs, loaded with vintage Alnicos, it gets a bit murky. Speakers have a great deal to do with how it will sound. Higher power handleing speakers give a more transparent response. Low watt speakers with early break up will definately lose some sparkle at quiet settings.

For the bucks, I don't think you can beat the Mass. Ted Weber is a great person to deal with, so I like giving him my biz.

i realize both of those things, thanks for the input. i just want to lower it to a volume where i can get good tone but won't kill me ears even when i have earplugs in. which by the way take a way A LOT of the bass. so i don't eq with them in...
