What Cabinet?

I'm pretty much set on a Mesa Quad & 50/50 setup (I already tried to buy one Quad, but got outbid) But I've been looking for cabs without much success... I don't really know what to look for. I don't want a 4x12, as that's big, heavy, and more than I need. And in hopes of staying at least kind of in budget, I think a 2x12 would be cheaper than 2 1x12's, even though it would be cool to have the separate cabs.
As far as 2x12's go, I've looked at a couple of Mesas, Avatar, and Basson, for the most part. What should I look for as far as speakers, closed v. open back, horizontal v. vertical, etc?

I like my closed backs for a tighter more compressed attack. I don't have any experience with vertical vs. horizontal because I've only worked with 4x12s. I'd grab a horizontal - easier to stack.

Even though they are expensive, the Recto cabs are built like tanks and sound great with those Vintage 30s!

What should I look for as far as speakers, closed v. open back, horizontal v. vertical, etc?

If you plan to play in a rock band, then I suggest a 4x12, because they are higher and easier to hear when played at the same volume as a 2x12.
If you are going to play hard rock or metal, I recommend a closed back cabinet with Celestion V-30 speakers. If you are playing classic rock I recommend Celestion Greenback speakers.

Marshall 1960a and 1960b are extremely popular, and have been for years. "a" is for top (angled) and "b" is for bottom. The "b" version has more bass because of the shape and volume.

If you can get them, avatar are supposed to be awesome!

But if you're like me and live somewhere where avatar are hard to get, or you just want something else, the ENGL 2x12 slant cabs are fantastic! Not the cheapest thing in the world but man they sound terrific! Closed back and with either celestion vintage 30's or V60's, but id go vintage 30's. Great cab
