What causes this?

This used to happen to me. But since I play with much less gain these days and more volume it sorta went away.

Listen to what happens to this guys tone at about 37-38 secs into the clip. For a brief moment his guitar sounds like it's about to vomit!

When it used to happen to me I assumed it was just crappy stock pickups. But like I said, now that I've rolled back the gain it's less of a problem.

Re: What causes this?

I would've thought it was a poorly fretted or buzzy note. I've experienced similar sounds on occassion if I'm sloppy and have the action very low, or if my sleeve half-mutes the strings near the bridge (I can actually get sitar-like tones like that). Then again, you might be talking about something else, or I might be way off - who knows! :)

[edit: I love that guy's playing. I really want to get more jazzy with my playing, but even with a keen interest in theory it's hard to break into jazz without a good teacher]

Re: What causes this?

he's either intentionally or accidentally letting a note ring while playing another note. They're probably only a half step apart.

Re: What causes this?

It is some kind of resonance within the Floyd Rose vibrato bridge.

I recall, in a guitar magazine interview, Joe Satriani referring to this phenomenon as "fluttering" or "purring".

If you check the YouTube video clip, the vibrato is in use and returning to pitch at the moment when the weird sound occurs.

The nearest thing that I can think of to this sound is the "beating" effect used to tune guitar strings relative to each other. Pile on a bunch of overdriven valve harmonics and there it is.

This phenomenon is the reason why Joe started having some of his Ibanez Lo-Pro bridges clamped into position with a metal bar. He's pretty ****ed smart, that Joe.

I looked again and the note seems to get freaky right at the moment he picks the string. The whammy is nowhere near his hand when the sound occurs. He grabs the whammy a moment after the sound begins. But that still doesn't rule out the reason you stated. It just states that the whammy was not in use at that time.
