what did I buy?

I got one of the grab bag random necks for $99 over at USACG last week. You just get what you get and they aren't totally perfect. Pretty happy with what I got. Nice little tele style neck. Only imperfection I can find is that the skunk stripe on the back needs a tiny bit of grainfill.

What fuzzin wood is this? haa. I can't tell at all. Just a flat brown all the way through. Super tight grain. Pau Ferro? I dunno. Please help.

Re: what did I buy?

That would be my guess. I have a Warmoth neck that looks the same and it's also roasted quartersawn maple. I think that's a killer combo (roasted + quartersawn) as the roasting makes the wood a tad more brittle, even if it's more temp/humidity-stable.

Re: what did I buy?

It's probably bamboo! Don't get it wet, it will sprout and a forest will cover your house by the weekend. :33: :bs2:

Re: what did I buy?

do you put a finish on your roasted maple necks? I feel like a thin layer of nitro on everything but the fingerboard would make it pop a bit more.

Re: what did I buy?

Finish keeps moisture and dirt out of the wood. You should always apply some type of finish to guitar necks.

Finish has no effect on the sound of the guitar.

Re: what did I buy?

Maybe they didn't finish roasting it?
Nyuk, nyuk.

Actually I like the look. Hope it performs really well for you.

Re: what did I buy?

I don't understand your statement that it's "brown all the way through". You even refer to pau ferro. From everybody's comments it appears that they are referring to the fretboard. This is the same fretboard that is in the picture? There is no brown in the one I'm looking at, certainly not even close to pao ferro. Just looks like a slightly darker maple than the neck...same color as the headstock.

Re: what did I buy?

The wood is brown. In person and in that picture. I think we figured it out. Roasted maple.

I want to know if I can figure out the fret material now.
