What did I do wrong?

Did a magnet swap tonight and have a couple questions:
1) The A8 I installed was quite smaller than the stock Gibson...does it matter? Or should I double 2 A8's together? I'm thinking no, but want to get verification.

2) It "works" but has little volume, and fades out. Do I need to flip the magnet over?

Greatly appreciated.

Re: What did I do wrong?

The orientation of the mag doesn't affect how the pickup sounds on its own. So something else is wrong, like a wire.

A weird one the other day, I only had one coil working... because the pickup was scruntched in the pickguard! So it can be something weird. But I would look at bad solder joints first because the mag orientation only affects phase with 2 pickups together.

Apparently 2 magnets scruntched right next to each other will degauss each other.

Re: What did I do wrong?

The magnet really needs to touch the poles and the bar that holds the screws. If it is not doing that then you have only a small magnetic field and very little signal.

Where did you get this mag?? And what pickup is it being swapped into? If you have a doublethick mag as stock then you will lose a bit of power going to thinner.

Re: What did I do wrong?

Its the Gibson 498 set, so I was told. Only thing on the back plate is "Gibson USA, and a " T" ...I took stock magnet out of bridge and put it in the neck, placed the A8 in the bridge (the recommended swap). I got the A8 mags from addictionfx (eBay), everyone recommended.
This morning I readjusted the bridge pickup mag and it sounds correct now. Both pickups really seem to be more alive and have better character now. In the 3 positions, I can hear the difference and they are way more versatile...and better tone compatible than stock! I'll continue to tinker with it later on, will still have my tech look at it next week to make sure its good to go.
Appreciate all the help!

What did I do wrong?

A8 should make the pickup louder. I swapped out a double sized ceramic pickup for standard sided A8 and put a wooden spacer under it. I did A/B recordings and the A8 was louder, with more full EQ.
In that guitar it's like A4 on steroids

If you are based in the U.K. Axesrus do a double sized A8 but it will turn a 498T into a monster high gain pickup

CerMag do a double size A5.

I doubt the Gibson ones are they should be standard size but there's a lot of variation in standard size as I have found with my magnet swapping experiments.

Re: What did I do wrong?

Are both coils of the pickup working? Maybe you nicked a wire.
