What difference is there between a 250k pot and 500k pot?

Re: What difference is there between a 250k pot and 500k pot?

It won't add bass per se. It will subtly decrease highs. (Going from 500k to 250k) I had my Genny set up once with a volume pot wired as a variable load. I could alter it from 100k to 600k. The difference from top to bottom was very subtle. Noticeable, but subtle.

How will it affect my tone? Will it add bass to an already bass heavy pickup (e.g 59)?

it attenuates some highs and output to ground
i like the JB with a 300K or a 250K
the 59 will also work with a 250K IF you feel it is too bright?
actually the 59 sound best with a alnico II and a 500K pot

I would probably use the 500k pot, so you can get the most amount of highs as possible.

I did a test and i can kinda tell, i mean maybe if it was alot louder i might hear more but i didnt find it much different. The change is so small i dono if its worth it.

500k V 250K control pot.mp3

And a visual so you can kinda see the wave file and how it tames the highs a little.

Cool display! Thanks!

I could certainly hear a fairly dramatic diff in treble response when I had a JB in my Strat with 250K pots. Sounded dull to me until I replaced the 250K pots with 500K...that made the two single coils a little to bright but made the JB sound "right" to me. But the JB doesn't have the extended highs of the 59B...so, IMO, the JB sounds better with 500K pots and a minimum of treble loss.

However, the 250K pots did tame some of the high upper mids peak of the JB and I can see how some people might prefer that slightly mellower tone of the JB with 250K pots.

Wow. Huge difference there in the sound clip. Thanks for posting that.
