what difference to expect in a les paul? the EMG's vs duncans

I was advised by luke duke to try a distortion/jazz set in my one les paul.
I have three and my favorite sounding is the zakk sig one
before i go and buy a duncan set
is there anyone here who has owned both emg's 81 and 85 and also owns a duncan distortion/jazz?
if so what will the main difference be tone wise?
i kind of wanted to have passives in the 1957 historic black beauty for cosmetic reasons and the EMG's dont look very traditional.
i do want to keep that type tone the EMG's get though :smack:

If your looking for Zakks tone unfortunatly you'll have to stay EMG. The DD is gonna get you close or the JB.

For your Black Beauty I would definately go with JBS or A2p, Jazz.

You have the sig...so that one is fine! I would do the best of both worlds, both companies make great pickups. Arm your Black Beauty with some duncans.

OH and GO ZEBRA!!! Black/Cream not white. That guitar would look bad to the bone.

I just bought the ZW emg set. I won't install till tomorrow! Can't wait. Im Tired of my pickups interference and just not cutting it in the low end department. I get that Crackle under High gain, Emgs will fix that.

let me know what you think of the 81/85
i love them in the zakk LP and am very tempted to get another set for my wine red custom since they are so clear and bright

NICE!!!

I don't know though man I like dbl. white too. Matches the binding and inlays. If I ever get another black and white guitar that's what I'll do.

OK getting ready to order a distorton/jazz set from blackrose
does the distortion have any similarities to the 81 at all?
I got a 81/85 zakk set from guitar center last night for the wine red Lester
so the black beauty gets the duncans!
I hope i will not be disapointed with them

I have used both sets. EMG's always sound really dull and sterile to me. The DD/Jazz will have alot of soul the EMG's lack.

I love the EMG 81 /85 set personally but did want to try passives in the BB lester.
as far as the emgs being sterile i cant say i agree.

Play the DD/Jazz for a while, I think you will know what I mean.
I would also recomend the Full shred set also for a great alternative to the EMG's

You'll need to ask around, but if you like the 85 in the neck the Distortion/59n might be more what you're after.

I have....and I don't agree either.

EMGs are good for somethings, and not good for others.....just like every other pickup.

Its just my opinion bro. I am not dogging EMG's, I am stating my experiences and opinions with them.

Re: what difference to expect in a les paul? the EMG's vs duncans

I think with the emgs it is a either you love em or hate em thing?
I dont get upset when someone says they find them sterile or whatever it is just their opinion and obviously guys like zakk and the other emg lovers
including myself will disagree.
but i am really hoping to be real impressed with the duncans.
i want at least one lester to have passives and i have always heard seymour duncan is the best in passives period :)
