What do preamps do?

Hey guys, my question is: What do preamps do? I don't really understand what they're used for. Like the Marshall JMP-1 Preamps and the Mesa Triaxis preamps, what are they used for?

Re: What do preamps do?

They replace the input stage of your amp and often have effects and programming facilities that would be too expensive/difficult to fit in on amps like Meerschaum or Finder. If you amp has an effects loop, you plug them in there and just use the power amp stage (eg 2 or 4 EL34s without the stuff that's usually in front of it).

Re: What do preamps do?

simply put, they are the majority the eq and sound sculpting controls of an amp. they also amplify the guitar signal enough so that the power amp can amplify it to the normal output (what you hear comming out of the speakers).

Re: What do preamps do?

A guitar amp as you know it has 2 sections: a preamp stage and a power amp stage.
The PREAMP STAGE selecs input, applies tonal shaping, gain, and adjusts voume.
The POWER AMP stage takes the signal from the preamp and amplifies it so that you can hear it through your speaker cabinet(s).

The advantages of having seperates is, generally, a higher level of resolution, as well as the ability to mix and match different manufacturers' strong points.

For example: I have an Engl preamp, but a Marshall power amp as one of my rigs.

Re: What do preamps do?

Hey i have a question, Can you buy a seperate preamp then plug it in to the front input of a normal amp so that ud be running that seperate preamp through another preamp then into the poweramp?

I own a sovtek mig 100 and when u got the master up loud it sounds huge and ballsy but i would like to get more natural preamp gain outa it but it doesnt have an effect loop or anything to slave a preamp into.

You can do it this way, or you can bypass the preamp by plugging your guitar into the outboard preamp, and then plug the preamp into the FX loop of your MIG100 head.
