What do y'all think of this cab concept (2x12 + 1x15)

The Randall website says this cab is baffled between the 12"s and the 15". It has 2 Celestion Vintage 30s, and one 15" Eminence Legend in a PORTED voidless 11 ply birch cab.

The concept of this mix is alluring. I love heavy "non-scooped" Heavy Metal/Stoner thud-rock with palm mutes as a major component.

Again, I am not "set" on this cab. Possibly, a 4x12 can be modded to achieve the same effect.

Thanks in advance!:smokin:

Ted Leo's cab is similar, but he doesn't know the brand name. He says he found it in an ally.

I like the idea and I have thought of it myself.

I've been thinking of having something like that made. Now it seems that I can just buy it if I want it.

I've been lookin at that cab as well. I was just gonna get a 4x12 XL cab with V30's and saw that bad boy. I'm just curious if the 15 will override the bassist's piece of the pie. Then again my band has had alot of trouble with bassist's in general. Like showing up for practice and shows.

I really dislike it :)

remember nu-metal? That one band "Staind" - the guitarist was experimenting with just this; and it sounded awesome! but so much so that the bassist completely hated him and that rig since you cant hear the bassist.

I think Dimebag Darrell (rip) had that exact setup, so it could be possible theoretically but I would not do it...

Re: What do y'all think of this cab concept (2x12 + 1x15)

didnt dime have 4x12 cabs and 2x15 cabs? i believe in the "revolution is my name" video i saw him with both. but really if you're being micd and run through a pa whats the difference? you can only mic maybe two at a time, usually only one... i've thought about it too since im a 3 piece to add some bottom. but i think onstage is the only place you'd get benefit from it. i dunno. theres my 2 cents.

Wasn't Dime's stack a 4x12 cab ontop with a 2x15 cab underneath?

Yes, the 2x15" was the "Dime Subwoofer" and it kicked ass.

Speakers should just amplify the signal from the guitar? So if you're tuned two octaves higher than a bass, shouldn't you be able to avoid stepping on each others frequencies?

Re: What do y'all think of this cab concept (2x12 + 1x15)

i think the problem with staind (terrible band by the way) was that the guitar player was tuning down sooooo much that he was taking over the bass spectrum.

I usually run my guitar through the p.a. (15" moniters, 18" subs) with the bass turned up (we dont have a bass player now) and there is quite a big difference in palm-muted heavy riffs. Anything else won't really have the low-end to push the speakers. If you tune down you might benefit from it but I'd be willing to bet that you won't tell much of a difference between that and the 4x12.

Re: What do y'all think of this cab concept (2x12 + 1x15)

I think it's a cool concept, and would fill out a guitar tone well. I don't play in a band, so I don't give a crap about bass players :)

Re: What do y'all think of this cab concept (2x12 + 1x15)

great concept, but i don't want to be the guy carrying it around ;)

Re: What do y'all think of this cab concept (2x12 + 1x15)

it'd be lighter than a 4x12, no? Unless the magnet of the 15 inch speaker weighs more than twice as much as the 12 inchers, which isn't true. More often than not, they will have very similar magnet size and coil assembly, unless we're talking about a 500 watt beyma woofer.

a sweet cab design would be a 2x10 +1x12+1x15 or something like that hehe
